Having an education has always been of value to me and so has the idea of helping others.…

Attending college to become a school psychologist has been a dream of mine. Receiving this scholarship would help me pursue my career with helping other military children cope with their parent or parents being deployed. Working as a school psychologist, I can personally relate to the emotions and struggles the kids are going through more than most people because I have been in their position. I suffered through a period which left me lacking motivation and purpose in life. Friends and family told me a great deal of things I should do, but none of it appealed to me. Though I want to help people, I didn’t want to be a doctor; though history appeals to me, I didn’t think I would enjoy history in academia. Following a great deal of reflection and deliberation, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Among the lessons learned during my enlistment were intricacies of the professional responsibilities of a basic “boots on the ground” infantryman, a team leader of three other Marines, and subsequently a squad leader of twelve Marines.…

Growing up as the only child, I can vividly recall some of the difficult times my parents and I (mostly my parents) had to endure while living in the Philippines. We lived a modest lifestyle in Manila while both my parents worked as teachers in the public school system. In the Philippines, there is no designated neighborhood park for each community district; rather there is a centralize park where my parents would take me to every two to three weeks. However, that suddenly stopped when our family's financial condition turned for the worst during the mid-1970s embargo on oil and gas. Prices for rent, goods, and services skyrocketed, and my parents began to scramble for money just to put food on the table and to find alternative ways to pay…
