The sun was shining brightly against the trees and rocks surrounding us. The smell of bug spray and sunscreen drifted through the air. We had just arrived at our campsite. Stepping out of the car was like being an alien stepping on a new planet. Everything was different. It was peaceful. There were children running around on the volleyball courts, parents cleaning dishes from their breakfast, and dogs lying calmly underneath the shade of the massive trees at every campsite. I was five years old and it was my first time going camping. We were with our church group, so we knew practically everyone there. “Hi! How are you?” I heard my mother shout to a lady in the campsite next to us. I quietly let out a groan of frustration. Not again…, I thought to myself. She was going to talk for forever. It happened every time she encountered one of her old friends.

There was an old-fashioned ice cream maker, and all the children on the campsite got to help turn it if we wanted to. All the supplies were out on the asphalt, the ice cream maker, ingredients, ice, and salt. The main ranger was instructing all the children on what they should do and why it worked, while I hid behind my mother. I stared in jealousy and watched the other children having fun.
“Go out there and make ice cream with the other kids,” my mother told me. She pushed me in front of her and I joined everybody else, reluctantly. Ranger Glenn told me it was my turn to turn the ice cream maker. I looked back at my mother as she signaled her hand telling me to go. My brother and my sister were watching me from next to my mother, as they too were shy children. Once my turn was over and the next person went to spin the ice cream, I sat with everybody else waiting for the ice cream to be ready, at least a couple feet away from my mother. I wasn’t going to let her volunteer me for any other

"One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do,"this quote by Henry Ford reconnects when it comes to facing something you're afraid of; our fears. When we get over fears, we realize only then that we had the courage before to do that something we were afraid of doing. One time I was afraid was when I started ice skating. I was at a party for my younger sister's friend at an ice ring.…

A couple days passed and we finally reached Alcove Springs. I looked across the field and saw tall green grass and small hills barely peeking at the top of them. Wildflowers grew everywhere and it looked so pretty blending in with all the nature. The sunset between the small hills was a wonderful sight. We had to find flat land so we could camp there for two nights.…

TITLE Anza-Borrego Exploration: A Guide to Camping in the Desert LEAD PARAGRAPH When you think of camping, do you typically envision tents, grass, oak trees and bears (oh my!)? After spending the weekend camping in the vast Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, my notion of camping expanded tremendously. Let me set the stage by laying out just a few of the splendors you’re likely to encounter on the trail: sand, wild flowers, palm trees, and, if you’re lucky, big horn sheep! If you stay the night, you’re sure to see some tents and campfires too, so no need to reframe your entire perception of camping. For a detailed account of this non-traditional campers’ wonderland, read on!…

Dear Coach Williams, I have been a year long journey to the Tundra biome. It is very cold here and snows majority of the time. Summers bring wildflowers, but other than that it is mostly snow. This biome is found in the Arctic and has absolutely no trees and it does not get much rain here either. There is a lot of animals here: sheep, mountain goats, birds, grey wolves, polar bears, and very few other species.…

I sat on a rock watching a group of elementary school kids explore the natural world. They looked at fish, hopped on rocks and followed bugs to their hearts’ content. We were about a mile from our cabin, at the end of Christopher Creek before it went under the road. As a junior counselor, I probably went way out of my jurisdiction in taking my four campers on such a long trip down the creek, but their enjoyment was worth the potential trouble. I couldn’t believe it; none of them had ever taken a trip down a creek.…

Maybe my parents just wanted to get rid of me for a week, but I created some of my best memories at Camp Edwards. The camp itself is a paradise for kids of almost any age. Across the seemingly endless campground, there are tons of exciting activities that campers can participate in, such as sailing and archery. Camp Edwards sits right beside a huge lake, making the entire camp feel separate from the rest of the world, a utopia of sorts. Across the vast water to the right sat a lonely island that some campers had an opportunity to swim to.…

Does the type of liquid affect how fast an ice cube melts? Does the type of liquid affect how fast an ice cube melts? In an experiment (not ours) involving three liquids, pop melted the ice within it the fastest out of the three. Molecules cause ice to melt in a pretty simple way. Camp had been like a second home to me when I was younger. Our church would send us weeks at a time during the sizzling summers to girl power camps and conservatories. Long roads that seemed to go on without ends away from the city's noise where I could see only long pastures that contained cows and horses. I can still remember driving up the camps long driveway road the white gates that surround the perimeter held three different flags; American, Texan, and the Salvation Armys. This is the place I always hoped to return every summer, as the older I grew I was filled with excitement like a child for candy.…

Skating had always been your passion. As much as you liked showing off tricks in the skate park during the day, nightfall had always been your favorite time to pull out your wheels. There was something about the tranquil gloom of the evening, the radiance of the stars and moon, and the eerie silence of empty streets that gave you the utmost satisfaction of just being alone with your skateboard. You wrapped yourself in a hoodie as you walked towards the front door.…
