Narrative Essay About Grandmas

T Holidays were a time when family and close friends surrounded us. Two things really stand out in my memories of holidays. One is that all of our family was always together on the actual holiday, and the other is the sounds and smells that filled the house. I can remember waking up to the smells of food cooking, hearing the laughter of my siblings and cousins echo through the house, and in the background some form of sporting event on the TV. Holidays were always eagerly anticipated as it was one of the few times throughout the year my entire extended family was together. It was also an opportunity for my grandparents to spoil us even more than usual

My parents came home from the hospital one evening and I could tell by the look on their faces that something was wrong. They sat my brother and me down on the couch and told us that my grandma had gone to heaven where she would not be in pain anymore. Although, I was only three at the time, I had some understanding of what was taking place and I cried until there were no tears left in me. My grandmother 's passing left a huge hole in my heart. Not a day goes by that I do not think of her. My grandma greatly influenced my life in the short time we spent together on this earth, and her influence will carry on in me for many years to come. . My grandmother is one of several individuals who have been instrumental in shaping the person I am today. I would like to take the time to briefly describe the impact that several other important individuals have had and continue to have on my life. Perhaps, the greatest influence my parents have had on me thus far is in shaping the education and morals I have developed. My parents ,like my grandfather placed great value on the importance of education in the lives of my siblings and me. As parents they made sacrifices to ensure that we had a quality education, which for us meant attending private school. Through attending a private school our education was enhanced with rich values and beliefs based on our Catholic faith. In school we learned the core subjects, but more importantly we learned right and wrong, the definition of faith, and also the meaning of being a Christian in today’s world. At home, our parents made prayer before meals and bedtime a priority, attendance at church every Sunday was mandatory, and demonstrating the values and beliefs we were taught was encouraged daily. The influence of my parents stretches far beyond their words to their example through their actions. My parents not only taught us values such as treat others the way you want to be treated, but also lived out that message through their actions. My parents regularly, offered a helping hand whether it was caring for additional children to help out friends or providing a home cooked meal to family after the birth of a new baby, illness, or other difficult circumstances. Without a doubt my parents have greatly influenced both me and my siblings through their

When I was in 3rd grade, the only woman who had ever taken care of me passed away due to cancer. My Grandma took care of my mother and I from the time I was born and continued to care for me after my mom moved away. Our lives weren't very luxurious. She worked at Polk Community College as their lunch lady and I never had much; including my own bed. Still, I was never unhappy. I spent many hours after school sitting in the sparsely active cafeteria, while she served the students with a smile on her face. My Grandma was a kind, selfless woman who would never let you go hungry. She instilled in me how important it is to take care of the people around you, so that when you are in need, they will take care of you. It’s cliche, I know, but the world truly did lose a great human being. After her passing, My Mimi, who is my father’s grandmother, took me in and supplied me everything I needed to succeed in life. She worked until she was 70 to ensure we would always be comfortable. The amount of sacrifices she has made for me over the years is simply inconceivable. While she is a natural nurturer, she has always been a proud and…

I was very close with my Great Grandma Smith, who I lost a few years ago. This event caused pain and loss in my life, but it made me realize the importance of my relationships with my family. As a young child, I could not understand why someone I loved so much would leave. I had yet to realize, that it was not her choice, and that she is still always with me. I remember many of the memories we made. Including, Thanksgiving, playing with dolls, her igniting an interest in me to play piano, and listening to her stories, I will always remember these joyous moments. I still feel connected to her, whether just sitting and thinking about her, or playing the piano. Although she is gone, she is always in my heart. This made me realize how much we should value the time we have with people. After losing someone I loved, I am more careful concerning my interactions with my family, and realize how important they are in my life. Going through this event changed me. After, I thought of people and the way I act towards them differently. I would love my family even if I did not experience the pain of losing a family member, but since I lost someone I love, it makes me realize how important they truly are to me. Even though it was a painful experience, it was certainly a benefit to realize how blessed I am to have my…

My siblings and I have experienced the last 14 years without the ability to pick up the phone and call – just to talk. Sharing our important moments is no longer an option. Even though considerable time has passed, some days, the loss is still as painful as it was then. Often times, my nieces and nephews will reminisce about the times they shared with her growing up. The one thing they commonly relay is the love they felt from her. She always made sure they knew how much she loved them. For my dad, losing a life partner was extremely difficult, as I learned firsthand watching him trying to overcome those struggles. Having to learn a new “normal” without her there was now facing him every day. He has since remarried and lives a happy life. Even though he has found a way to pick up the pieces and move forward, he will never forget the life he had with my mother. All of our lives were hugely impacted that day. One of my biggest influences was the religion that my parents taught me both inside and outside of the church building. As a child I went to Sunday School nearly every week, which helped me learn about being a caring person and about how to behave and act in the world, along with all the content taught in the classes. I also learned valuable characteristics through multiple extracurricular activities such as music lessons, school sports, and athletic hobbies. I learned characteristics like hard work and dedication, as well as having the opportunity to exercise my brain and help me develop intellectually. Finally, as I’ve mentioned earlier, my family has had a large influence in my education. As well as teaching me necessary values and behavior they also encouraged me in my education. They have made sure I have necessary funds and resources to do well in college and can continue to stay enrolled in the college of my choice. They also encouraged me to learn any skill I could, from my dad teaching me about cars, to my mom teaching me technology, to my sister encouraging me to read, and to everyone else who has helped teach me skills or educate me about the world at any opportunity presented. My family has had a large role in teaching me things that aren’t necessarily taught in schools but can be utilized throughout my…

The day my grandma passed away is a day I can’t ever forget. It was the day my life changed drastically. She was the woman that raised me while my own parents couldn’t. She was there for me growing up and at the time, I didn’t realize how important she was or how important any of my family members were. It changed my perspective on life and I felt like a part of my innocence was taken away from me. I remember that day so well, like it happened yesterday.
