Upon hearing the news, my family flew to Vietnam and spent two weeks away from our jobs and schooling in order to care for her. The hospital that my grandmother was being treated in was located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. Like many of the hospitals in Vietnam, this one was overcrowded, under-equipped, and severely understaffed. Only the wealthy could afford the adequate treatment they required, and those less fortunate lived a suffering life overwhelmed with constant pain. I was stunned by how different the healthcare system was in Vietnam in comparison to the United States. During my time there, I discovered that many of these differences were due …show more content…

I became familiar with patient scheduling, insurance, the electronic charting system, and the handling of optometric equipment. Working here improved my attention to fine detail and challenged my time management skills. During my senior year, I volunteered for an Urgent Care clinic in the Health Care Administration department. Through this opportunity I was able to interact with many different healthcare professionals and observe how they worked as a team. I learned about clinic operations, staff trainings, the rules, and policies. Volunteering at this fast-paced clinic helped me learn how to adapt to change quickly and efficiently. My attention to detail and organizational skills were further enhanced as I worked closely with the clinic coordinator on several different projects. At both Princeton Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital, I interacted with a variety of patients. I learned to provide patients with anything that they may need and to uphold the ideology that patients always come first. Even though the endless runs to the ice machine, the reorganization of rooms and the wheel-chairing of patients between wards were trivial tasks, seeing the smile of patients and knowing you made their lives a little more comfortable was most fulfilling. With that being said, the large part of my hospital volunteer experiences did not teach me about communication issues and isolation that patients face in their personal lives. Working at a local re-entry task force in Trenton, A Better Way, also taught me the benefits of helping others by providing economic empowerment to less fortunate individuals.…

At the hospital, my duty is to assist doctors with lab runs and to discharge patients who often tell me about their unique experiences. Once, I wheeled out a frail, grizzled Vietnam veteran. He told me stories of the war, how he rescued Viet prisoners from communists. As he was about to leave, I said, “Thanks for your service,” and he responded, “And thank you.…
