Although I can’t remember it now, I believe this is when I first began to identify with my gender. My toy bin was full of Barbie dolls, dress-up clothes and Polly Pockets. If I were given the choice to play with a truck or a Barbie, without hesitation I would’ve reached for the Barbie. While I spent hours playing make believe in my Barbie mansion, my older brother played with trucks, racecars and a fake tool set. His fake tool set sat right next to my play kitchen set, which only seemed right. Society’s norm is that girls cook and clean, while men work and fix cars or things around the house. I learned a lot of stereotypical gender roles from my older brother and sister, along with my parents. Even today as I watch my brother interacting with his two-year-old son, he tells him he can’t wear the fairy wings or play with Barbies because ‘those are for girls.’ My family members were not the only influence on the evolution of my gender
