Narrative Essay On Fear Of Horses

Superior Essays
For as long as I can remember I have been terrified of horses. If I hear a horse noise, I freak out and get as far away as possible. If I see a horse, I run and hide. Even if there is a horse trail sign, I convince my family to take the other path. This whole fear, according to my mom, happened when I was seven years old. I was at my best friend's birthday which was a horseback riding party. Finally, it was my turn. I jumped on the horse, all was smooth until a few minutes into the ride, when the horse saw a plastic bag floating around. The horse was spooked and it jumped. I nearly fell off. From that time forward, I have since had an extreme fear of horses.

Saturday, 10 am sharp. Be ready please!”, my mom shouts as I run back up the stairs and slam my bedroom door.

My mom is the kind of person, who will not take no for an answer. If you don’t want to try something new, she will make you sit there until you take a bite. She will make you go to school until the office calls and tells her to pick you up because you are sick. She is very straightforward and always set on her decision. I knew I had to prepare because there was no turning back. It was a good thing I had that Friday off because in order for me to prepare myself, I watched every known horse movie known to anyone, Racing Stripes, Secretariat, and even a Barbie movie about a horse. Soon later, it was 8 o’clock in the morning. I woke up, my stomach twisted in knots. I slowly got out of bed, got myself ready, and into the car. As all 5 of us piled into the car, we drove off, heading out to conquer my fear, which I was totally fine living with. We pulled up into the parking lot, where a riding instructor greeted us and took us on a tour of the stables. We walked around the arenas, the fields, and finally the stables.

“Um, do we have to go in there?”, I

Yet now, after moving and leaving my companion behind, I rarely experience that isolation and peace.…

Not Horse Play Although the world of horses is a very elaborate one, most people do not know the real cost and responsibility of owning a horse. Most horse breeds are bred for specific reason whether it be for beauty or brains. There really is no animal quite like the horse given how many different variations exist. In my hometown, I live in a community that has a large drive for tourism due to the horse race track located about ten minutes from my house.…

Every year, over 100,000 American horses are transported over U.S. borders to be slaughtered for human consumption (“Horse Slaughter”). Hearing the term “horse slaughter” is enough to send a chill up someone’s spine. Slaughtering horses is an inhumane way for them to die. Dozens of horses are forced into cattle trailers where they will travel thousands of miles across the border to the slaughterhouses. Most of them arrive malnourished, injured, or even dead.…

Horse slaughter is a large problem in the United States. There are no slaughterhouses in our country, but horses can still legally be sold at auction to a slaughterhouse in another country. Once sold to a slaughterhouse, the terrified horses are transported just across the border to be inhumanely killed. Why would an American want to send their horse to be killed in a different country when they can humanely and safely euthanize or sell them to a loving home? Many foreign countries eat horse meat, but this can be very dangerous.…

Yesterday marked the six-month anniversary of the day I was hired for my fifty-cent-more than minimum wage post at a big-box pet store. I started off as a cashier and made my way over into Pet Care in record time, especially for someone who had close to no experience with the animals I would be caring for. I knew a bit about the small mammals; hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rats, mice, and chinchillas, and I tried to make that a bigger selling point than it actually is. There isn't nearly as much to know about them as there is, say, eyelash crested geckos. Or running a fucking fish tank.…

I woke with a start at the obnoxious noise coming from my alarm. It was 9:00 a.m. on a Thursday, in the middle of the summer. Today, I was going to my favorite place in the world: the Tulsa State Fair. I dragged myself down the creaking stairs and into the family room, where I turned on the television. I then ate a bowl of cocoa puffs and went back upstairs to prepare myself for the day.…
