The start of a school year means the start of numerous fall sports. Student-athletes lace up their cleats and sneakers, and take their respective places on the athletic fields. While many people may argue that soccer is an objective sport, it contains a high degree of subjectivity. The coaching staff is responsible for all decisions, including the roster on game days. They choose which players will start, how long he/she will play, and whether or not substitutes will make the field. An all-star might sit the bench on a varsity high-school team. Most people do not want to speak about their failures, but it is what you do with a failure that defines you as a leader. It was a cold October afternoon, when I made my way up to the Ryan varsity soccer field. As I climbed the stairs towards the locker room, I felt my heart starting to beat faster. I had always dreamed of playing high school varsity soccer. A fundamental player on the freshman team, I could not wait to assist my teammates in defending our state championship title for the third consecutive year. As I looked over the field, I knew I belonged here. Before the game, the coaches warned us of the visiting team, Morristown High School. Morristown suffered only one loss this season. Part of me could not help but feel a little disappointed when I did not hear my name. I grabbed a blue pinny, and stood beside my fellow teammates on the sidelines. The referee blew his whistle, and the game started. Our team truly played with confidence, scoring three goals in the first twenty minutes. I listened as the coaches called for a few substitutes from the bench. Frustrated, I gazed across the field and stood, silently, watching the scoreboard.
