The start of a school year means the start of numerous fall sports. Student-athletes lace up their cleats and sneakers, and take their respective places on the athletic fields. While many people may argue that soccer is an objective sport, it contains a high degree of subjectivity. The coaching staff is responsible for all decisions, including the roster on game days. They choose which players will start, how long he/she will play, and whether or not substitutes will make the field. An all-star might sit the bench on a varsity high-school team. Most people do not want to speak about their failures, but it is what you do with a failure that defines you as a leader. It was a cold October afternoon, when I made my way up to the Ryan varsity soccer field. As I climbed the stairs towards the locker room, I felt my heart starting to beat faster. I had always dreamed of playing high school varsity soccer. A fundamental player on the freshman team, I could not wait to assist my teammates in defending our state championship title for the third consecutive year.
