Personal Narrative: My Journey To Boot Camp

The thought of going to boot camp scares many people off from military service. To me it was just another part of the journey I was about to undertake in a long career of military service.

I showed up to the Columbus, Ohio Military Entry Process Station on a cold November morning at 430 am before the sun started to peek about the horizon. I was very tired due to the fact I was not used to waking up before 7 am before that point. I walked off the bus into the station to be greeted by the desk petty officer giving me instruction on where to head to finish up my out process and get ready for the bus ride to Great Lakes, Illinois for boot camp. I finished up all the necessary paperwork got sworn in around 3 pm and was told to sit in the waiting room for the bus to take me and the rest of us to boot camp.

I thought they were going to take it easy on us since we had traveled so far but I was very wrong. The door opened and 2 Recruit Division Commanders stormed on the bus in there perfectly pressed uniformed and started screaming for everyone to get the butts off the bus and move into the processing building. This was my first taste of what turned out to be a very long first day of boot camp.

I entered the building along with the 40 or so other people that were on the bus with me and got told to stand on the lines painted on the floor and shut up. You could feel how nervous every one of the new recruits were and the Recruit Division Commander knew it and started picking the weak ones out of the crowd. I hear one recruit throw up, I heard one pass out and hit the ground, and another one was told to do push-ups until the RDC got tired. Once they were done with all that nonsense we got to all out parents to tell them that we were alive and we love them. I called my mom and did

It was a rainy morning in Seattle, and I wore my Army dress uniform. Stepping off the bus, I ran 100 yards to the entrance of the Airport. After I purchased my ticket and checked my bags, I headed to the bar. It was the time of the winter equinox, and I was headed home with my discharge in my duffle bag. I suppose I should have worn my civilian clothes, but I had been stateside six months, and the comradeship I experienced in Vietnam had yet to loosen its grip on me.…

Dear Mother and Father, Last time I talked to y'all, I was in a trench on the battlefield, and now I am in a hospital in France. It all started out when I was in the Firing Trench, which is the first trench on the battlefield and is right behind No Man’s Land. It is 45 yards in front of the Cover Trench, and it is where we fire at the Germans. The trench has a dugout, duckboards, and firesteps. In the dugout, all the soldiers ate, slept, and rested before battle.…

The Command Sergeant Major and other Senior Leaders came through “the Bubbles” and told us to grab our gear and move to the vehicles. We loaded on the vehicle, not really knowing if this was just a drill or not, but they were going further with this drill than they ever had in the past. Our Platoon Sergeant came out and told us that this was the real deal and that we were pulling out and moving to FT Clayton to stage. Things suddenly got…

My life was changed forever when I decided to go with a group from my church on a mission trip to host a bible school in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. I had been warned prior to going that it would change my life in a drastic way, but no one could have prepared me for the amount of brokenness and heartbreak I would witness. Flying into Port au Prince, even from the air I could see that the homes were dilapidated, and the ones that weren’t, were pretty close to falling apart. I could see trash and pollution in the ocean and piled up on the land, and debris still left over from the earthquake that happened in 2010. Landing in the airport was nerve-wracking.…

During this time, the Cold War was beginning to end. The Cold War was started to help protect Iran from the Soviet Union, aka communism. A Negative Feeling on the Marine Corps Throughout history, the military has been a subject of extreme speculation. Because of the inability to know exactly what is going on in a combat conflict, many are left with opinions and ideas about what may be going on. I grew up in a very patriotic family, who always showed respect and gratitude to the military. In result I wanted to join the force and earn that respect for myself. After joining the corps I quickly learned that what my parents had felt, and really what most of the public had felt about the Marine Corps was absolutely incorrect.…
