Sitting in my curtained ER stall with my achilles in a temporary splint, the nurse rounded the corner with a pair of crutches. For some reason, I’d always wished that at some point be on crutches, even for a day. This was it for me, I guess. I felt a sort of excitement considering my current state. Little did I know, your armpits really do take the infamous beating. I stood up and as the nurse held the door for me into the ER lobby, I could tell the envy I had had for people on crutches up to this point, was mistaken. The splint soon became a hardcast post my surgery to repair my achilles tendon that I ruptured my former age of seventeen. It was tennis that got me; a pivot, lunge and POP as I went for a forehand. I could find alternate options to transport myself around school and through life other than the dreaded crutches. We looked into options but initially settled on an iWalk, which was an apparatus that allowed me to be able to walk with both legs. It looked like a prosthetic from the front, but my leg was bent at the knee ninety degrees behind me and my aircast rested on a knee pad. All I had to do was move my thigh in a walking motion and I could walk, free of armpit chafing. I was fondly known as peg leg at my Junior prom, but at least I could dance. I will admit, it was an extremely handy around the house but the judgemental looks I received and feelings I felt when in public didn’t make up for its convenience. I felt as if I was in the shoes of somebody who was an amputee though it was only temporary for me. I experienced what people go through if it’s permanent. The iWalks convenience and the emotions that came with it soon got tiring. I didn’t enjoy the feeling of trying to keep up my 3.1 mph walking speed when realistically I would only be able to pull out a 2.3. I retired the
