The splint soon became a hardcast post my surgery to repair my achilles tendon that I ruptured my former age of seventeen. It was tennis that got me; a pivot, lunge and POP as I went for a forehand. I could find alternate options to transport myself around school and through life other than the dreaded crutches. We looked into options but initially settled on an iWalk, which was an apparatus that allowed me to be able to walk with both legs. It looked like a prosthetic from the front, but my leg was bent at the knee ninety degrees behind me and my aircast rested on a knee pad. I will admit, it was an extremely handy around the house but the judgemental looks I received and feelings I felt when in public didn’t make up for its convenience. I felt as if I was in the shoes of somebody who was an amputee though it was only temporary for me. I experienced what people go through if it’s permanent. While Dr. Romash is quick to explain that being an orthopedic surgeon he’s never had to face anything close to the seriousness of life and death, he does face limitations in his practice. Like in my case, Dr. Romash explains “I had tell, you(me), a great hard working kid committed to play a sport she loved at my dream school (Haverford College) that she couldn’t because your body couldn’t hold up, there was no possible way it could. Did I want to? Goodness no, but one must accept the limitations of medicine.” Shattering patient’s hope of returning to how they were before their injury or problem, has been a major obstacle in Dr. Romash’s career.…

I am replying to Maria Vargas post on scenario number four about arthritis. Ms. Vargas, provided a very detailed and descriptive scenario where she had to dump out coins from a zip wallet onto the floor and pick them back up while wearing ace bandages wrapped around her knees and gardening gloves on her hands. Initially, while reading her post I wanted to laugh because I could imagine trying to do this myself, and how awkward and clumsy this must have felt. But, regrettably I realize this subject isn't something to laugh about. Reading her post gave me more insight on what it must feel like to suffer from arthritis, and that we as nurses need to have patience and understanding while treating our patients.…
