As I put my empty dish in the dishwasher and headed upstairs for bed, I thought about the books I wanted my mom to read to me tonight. Once I reached my bedroom, I walked over to my little wooden bookshelf and began to sort through a variety of different works— from the informative National Geographic children’s books, to the classic Little Golden Books.
By the time my mom had reached my bedroom, I had selected four books for her to read: two National Geographic books— one about sea creatures and another about bugs — Goodnight Moon, and, my favorite, Green Eggs and Ham. When I was finished getting dressed, I eagerly flew down the stairs, expecting an actual person my age to be standing in the kitchen. Instead, I found my mom sitting on the couch with a book. As I approached her, she looked at me and smiled.
“I want to introduce you to Junie B. Jones. I think you’ll like her.” she said as she held up the book. “This book is called Junie B. Jones Has a Peep in Her Pocket.”
I was a little disappointed, albeit I truly did enjoy hearing about the misadventures of this “Junie B. Jones” character. I found her extremely relatable, and found it rather easy to mentally self-insert myself into the story. After three chapters, my mom stopped reading. She then asked me if I had liked the book. When I answered “yes,” she told me that she would go out to the bookstore later that day and pick up a few more books. That night, my mom and I went to the store and picked up five more Junie B. Jones books: Junie B. Jones is a Beauty Shop Guy, Junie B. Jones Smells Something Fishy, Junie B. Jones is a Party Animal, Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook, and Junie B. Jones: Boss of Lunch.
