I have a soft spot for Azariah so when she asks me each week after finishing her homework if she can skip her twenty minutes of required reading, I am always tempted to oblige. The most important educational tool Azariah can have in her toolkit to give her the best chance of success is the ability to read. As a result, it is vital to her educational journey that she practice her reading skills each day regardless of whether or not she wants to. While it may not seem necessary in the moment, reading each day can have lasting effects on Azariah’s development, critical thinking skills and vocabulary, among other things. In the long run, I would limit Azariah by giving in to her demands refusing to read. In using deontology, I can reason that it is my duty as her tutor and mentor to ensure her future success. Regardless of whether or not Azariah thinks reading is in her best interest, it is my ethical duty to follow through on her teacher’s
