I first met Azariah through Ascension, the after-school enrichment program run by St. John’s Parish. It was created with the mission to provide emotional and academic support for the children who live in this neighborhood and attend one of Worcester’s lowest performing schools, Union Hill. Azariah’s bear hugs envelop me with love and excitement when she greets me each day that I spend volunteering to teach her reading and math skills and act as a big sister. Behind her smile and warm embrace is a young girl who has not been given many opportunities to grow and reach her potential. She has trouble concentrating and does not comprehend how studying is going to be of value to her life.
I have a soft spot for Azariah so when she asks me each week after finishing her homework if she can skip her twenty minutes of required reading, I am always tempted to oblige. I remember being a third grader anxious to finish my homework and reading so I could go outside and play with my friends. However, unlike Azariah, my parents were extremely hands on and involved in my elementary school

The most important educational tool Azariah can have in her toolkit to give her the best chance of success is the ability to read. As a result, it is vital to her educational journey that she practice her reading skills each day regardless of whether or not she wants to. While it may not seem necessary in the moment, reading each day can have lasting effects on Azariah’s development, critical thinking skills and vocabulary, among other things. In the long run, I would limit Azariah by giving in to her demands refusing to read. In using deontology, I can reason that it is my duty as her tutor and mentor to ensure her future success. Regardless of whether or not Azariah thinks reading is in her best interest, it is my ethical duty to follow through on her teacher’s
