Narrative Essay On Arizona Heat

Despite having lived in Georgia for the past couple of years and having dealt with the immense heat and humidity there, I was still unprepared for the heat of the Arizona summer. As an experienced hiker, I thought of myself as experienced enough to deal with the heat and smart enough to not have to worry about it. I would find out all too soon that I was neither experienced enough nor smart enough to deal with the Arizona heat. I left my house at four in the morning, reasoning that since I had left so early I would be able to get out to the trail, do the hike, and get back, all before it became too hot. There was an accident on the road and I had to go about twenty minutes out of my way in order to reach the highway. After forty minutes on the road I reached the trail I wanted to hike only to find out it had been closed. It was about five in the morning at this point and I decided to go to a different trail about a half hour away so I would be able to still hike before heading back home. I wish I had …show more content…
“Okay, no problem,” I thought, “I have Asprin in the car, I’ll get some when I get back,” I continued to forge my way down the trail, albeit at a slightly quicker pace now. I began to feel thirsty as the dry dust caked my throat and the sun beat down on me. I reached for my water before realizing that I had recycled it at the summit. “Fuck!” I swore aloud, my heart beating at a pace slightly more rapid than usual. It was then I realized that I was sweating a lot more than I should have been, and I was far more tired than I normally would have been on a hike of this intensity. A realization dawned on me, these were all symptoms of heat exhaustion, I racked my brain trying to remember what I was supposed to do in cases like this and recalled that getting into air conditioning was of the highest priority, and if you couldn’t do that, to get in the shade and try to cool yourself

The brisk trek through rough wilderness had taken its toll on the portly fog of a man. Now wheezing, he bowed low to prop up his arching frame on a knee high boulder on the side of the path. He watched with passive intrigue as giant sweat droplets fell to earth. Each one making a crater in the previously undisturbed soil carpeting the seldom used trail leading up to the Burbank overlook. He wanted nothing more than to feel the wind blow across his puffy face when he got to the top.…

The adrenaline was pumping through my veins and I couldn’t stop despite the fact that my lungs felt as if there were icy shards lodged in my chest. Haunted figures of the men that destroyed my life as I knew it flashed before my eyes as I lept over crates and pushed down trash cans behind me, my path marked by a riddled maze of rotted food and old possessions. The tears in my eyes were no longer tears, but streaks of moisture…

Fifteen miles in, watching the sun make its first appearance, I could almost feel the high 90 degree temperature begin to shift into triple digits. I couldn't help but smile. The stakes had just been raised. Despite being from the generally frigid state of Michigan, I was fairly certain I knew what overheating felt like before my trip. Having been a dedicated cross country and track runner in high school, I had practiced and raced in triple digit temperatures.…

When we carried them into the “sweat”, my uncle brought water which was poured on the hot lava rocks. The initial feeling was a bit overwhelming, the sudden moist heat of what was a seemingly endless amount of steam in that moment. As minutes passed by, the overwhelming heat got to me and I felt that it might get too hot for me to handle. Then, I suddenly found myself extremely relaxed, despite the intense heat, my lungs filled with hot air as my body adjusted to the heat. Finally, after about 15 minutes or so, my dad brought in a large jar of water for me to cool myself off, despite the water being somewhat warm from being outside, it felt shocking, as if I was taking a cold…

Keeping Cool I was enjoying a hundred-degree day when my father decided to bless it by telling us to continue working on a car. Reluctantly, I got away from a pleasant breeze, courtesy of the hard-working desk fan, and headed out into the garage. From there, I searched for common tools that we might need while reassembling the engine. Although I was under the protection of my garage, I was not safe from the blaring heat as the amount of metal around me seemed to only amplify it. Thoroughly working through multiple thought-provoking situations taught me to keep cool while performing any task.…
