Alfalfa’s Shadows
“Give me an R” a loud man yells at the front of the theater. He now has everyone in the audience’s attention. “R,” the crowd yelled back at him. “Give me an O!” “O!” “Give me a C!” “C!” “Give me a K!” “K!” “Give me a Y!” “Why,” the crowd answers back sarcastically. It was show time. The leader of a theater group, Paul, successfully got everyone in the crowd to pay attention. We had been practicing for this night for about two months. I could already feel the sweat drip down my face. My mask of makeup was going to melt off by the end of the night. However, that’s how these shows usually go, bright red lipstick gets smeared all over your face by 2am when we leave Wehrenberg Theater. I was a new addition to the crew and in charge of bringing the actors props to act out different scenes from the 1975 cult classic film Rocky Horror Picture Show. I had seen the movie plenty of times as an audience member but this was different. Most of the people in our ‘shadow cast’ have been acting out this movie for 6+ years. The cast grabbed red lipstick and started marking Vs on the newbies foreheads. The red ‘V’ is for virgins, which we call anyone who is new to the show. Paul then instructs the crowd to swear an oath. Each virgin holds one hand up and puts the other over their crotch. “I, Virgin Scum, Do hereby admit, in front of all these people, that I am a Rocky Horror virgin, and that I wish to lose all my morals, and accept decadence into my heart, yay though I walk through the valley of heterosexuality, I shall fear no Republicans, in the name of the Frankie, the Rocky, and the Holy Riff-Raff.
