There I was a junior in high school starting my second semester of school taking a welding class. At first we had to do a couple of lessons out of a book and pass the tests before we could start welding. Once we finished the tests we started to weld on scrap metal for practice. Then the teacher would look at the welds and make sure we were improving. When we were done with welding and scrap metal and showed we were proficient at it she said it was time for us to pick a project to start on. It was at this time that I had to choose a project so I chose to build a custom bumper.
The first step was finding a truck to build a bumper for. I knew that my grandpa had just bought a new truck it was a 2012 dodge 3500, and he was thinking about buying a bumper for it. I went over to my grandpas and asked him if I could build a bumper for it rather than him spending the big bucks for a new one. He agreed to let me build the bumper for his truck. I had to get the measurements off his truck and see how I was going to have to mount the bumper to the frame.
Once I had the truck picked out I needed to come up …show more content…
I started out with making the mounts that connect the bumper to the truck frame. After I was completed with the mounts I attached the sheet metal that I cut out using a plasma cutter to the mounts in the center. I then realized that all the other sheets I was going to have to cut out were going to have odd angles. So I came up with drawing the pattern on cardboard and cutting it out to use it as a template so I could see the piece in place without cutting it out wrong and wasting the material. The entire time I was not just putting the sheets on and welding them completely I was just tack welding them. That allows you to still be able to do minor adjustments to it or you can just cut them off if you messed up. Then I had the bumper put together and it was time to weld everything
