Narrative Essay On A Trip To America

Some of us have never had the honor or privilege of going out of the United States of America to see the world. This summer I received that chance. In May of 2015 my mom told me, “We are going to see Ben and Samantha, “my Aunt and Uncle in the Dominican Republic. At first I was opposed to going, but as time went on I grew more and more excited about going on the trip. By June, everything was finalized and I was leaving to the Dominican Republic!

My mom, sister, brother, and I flew to Dallas, Fort Worth, then Miami International Airport, and finally to Santo Domingo Airport. It totaled to be a 14 hour flight with layovers! By the time we arrived in Santo Domingo with the time change and layovers, it was about 12:30 in the morning! We were all excited to get off the plane and see my aunt, uncle, cousin and other sister. The first thought that hit me as I stepped off the plane was, “it’s not that hot…” we were still inside the air-conditioned airport. Before we could go out of the airport we had to go through immigration, which was a pain! Once we passed immigration we just walked to the front doors where we

The people there spoke so fast that I didn’t get a word of it. This was a huge shock for me! I have always grown up speaking English. My mom and grandma were the ones always trying to get me to learn Spanish, but I always thought that I would not need it. For the first time in my life I was sorry that I did not take their advice. Everything the people said flew over my head. Every time someone spoke to me I just had to say, “No hablo Espanola.” It was funny for them, but for me it was the scariest thing in the world. Throughout the month that I stayed there I was learning Spanish from the teens, and trying desperately to understand what they were saying to me and about

At the time my mom and dad only spoke Spanish in the house. To make matters worse, when I was about three years old my parents sent me to Dominican Republic for two full years. The time that I spent there was when I grasped more, and more the culture of my people. English was nonexistent. For me Spanish was the only way of life, there was nothing…

The flight to Panama was long and bumping as I flew aboard a C-141, this aircraft is no longer in service. As I departed the aircraft, I was met by oppressive heat and humidity. As I looked around my new surroundings, I could not help but think that it looked as if someone had laid a giant green carpet over the landscape. It was definitely the most beautiful country that I had seen and, in my opinion it still is. The tarmac was busy with all kinds of activity going on.…

It was too boring at the time. But now I can see why my parents always pushed for me to learn Spanish. It allowed me to be much more culturally “sensitive” in a very culturally diverse world. I guess the moral of this story was that if I took up the many opportunities that were present to me when I was young. I would be able to speak to all of my relatives and breeze through those pesky Spanish…

As I walked into the house, I was greeted with kisses on the cheek and a variety of foods. Mostly of the foods were foreign to me, so I decided to have a salad. I was getting awfully weird looks since I only picked the salad, but I did eventually try a couple dishes. All around me I heard everyone other than me talk in Portuguese which made me feel like an outsider. My friend did tell me snippets of the conversation when he thought it was necessary, but for the most part I did not know half of the conversation at the dinner table.…
