Have you ever taken a camping trip when you were younger with your family or a group of friends? Well when I was about sixteen, I went on a canoeing trip to the Ichetucknee river with a BSA (boy scouts of America) crew. We had canoed the hole 12 miles which held an abundance of alluring sites to behold. There were manatees, turtles and tons of fish and much more to see.
Once a year troop 123 goes on a canoeing trip to the Ichetucknee river which is a long all-day trip that is six miles long. The scout leader told everyone who is going to get with their assigned patrols and make your meal plans for this weekend's trip. So, we did just that and made our meal plans for Saturday morning, lunch, and diner as for Sunday morning and we stop at a fast food eatery on the way back. Everyone prepares the meal cooks and clean though shifts that way the workload is shared. We also decide tent partners and whoever is tenting together is also, the person you will be canoeing with. Upon, Friday night we all met up checked everyone's bags then packed everything into the trailer. Then checked the

Then a head count of everyone there. We then proceed to get everyone in the water. Now that everyone is situated. We can now enjoy a nice day canoeing down the Ichetucknee river a gorgeous and bone chilling river water with many springs flowing into it with crystal clear water unclouded by pollution. We saw logs with turtles all over them not even an inch of space some even piled on top of one another. Every once in a while, we even saw the manatees swimming all around us you could even pet them if you so desired. A little bit later we got to a spot where we could hoop out of the canoes and even float alongside them and a lot of different creatures in the

My family consists of my parents, older brother Patrick ( now a sophomore at Madison), younger brother Declan ( now a sophomore at MUHS), and my younger sister Nora ( now in 8th grade). We were all there for this trip just younger. On our trip one of the main attractions we stopped at for a few days was at the Grand Teton National Park in Jackson Hole Wyoming. Today Kit and i led the group to Izaak Walton lake. I was nervous this morning for taking such a big role. I didn’t want the power to get to my head and end up being mean or over demanding. In the early morning i went around telling people to get water and start undoing their tents. Surprisingly we ate, broke down our gear, and began our stretch circle forty minutes before the usual.…

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in the wild? Do you envision dangerous animals and food cooked over a fire you had to build? One way that you can have that experience is by camping on a nature preserve or at a large lake. I have camped many times while growing up but the two places I remember the most would be Wichita Mountains or Lake DeGrey. Both of the places are places that people can go camping at if they are looking to get out of the city.…

On Friday night, I was relaxing on my couch, when a knock came at the door. I went to get it, and what I saw was inspirational. As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

Drewe and I walked and told each other stories about what we’ve done and talking about things we liked or games that we were going to play for hours. Stopping every now and then to sit for awhile or to set up snares, it was around noon when we found a place we wanted to build a fort in. There were birds everywhere, rabbits and squirrels occasionally passed by, there were a lot of spiders though which kinda sucked but we got rid of them. The weather was beautiful too, the sky was clear, it was hot but there was enough wind to keep cool. We thought it was probably starting to get late so we started to build a fort, cutting down trees and making basically a small home in the forest, It took us a few hours but it was so much fun.…

I parasailed with my mother and sister. Parasailing is when you’re in a harness connected to a parachute, which is also connected to a boat. When the boat speeds up, you’re lifted up into the sky. While we were up there we saw a Cow-shoe Stingray! From the top view of the ocean the water seemed aquamarine rather than blue.…

Throughout the course of my short seventeen years, I have grown and learned many things. I grew up in a small rural town called Elk Creek. There are no strangers in Elk Creek; people sleep with their doors unlocked and their windows open. Everyone who has grown up in a small town can agree that friendship and community become a second nature trait. Although I have copious amounts of love and respect for where I grew up; I believe that I do not belong there.…

In a world of cars, highways, and skyscrapers, it can be difficult to see how much nature matters and affects our lives. For me, nature has always been an incredible place to go to get to know myself better and learn to appreciate the little things in life. A BWCA Wilderness canoe-camping adventure with my friends would be an amazing opportunity to grow as a person, spend time in my favorite place, and make lifelong memories with my friends. My past experiences in Boundary Waters have drastically changed my life by teaching me lessons about myself and the world around me.…

I was conceived at the bottom of Grand Canyon. At four months old I was on my first river trip. The Colorado River banks were my first playground, and as someone who wants to preserve the wild landscape that I call home, I am looking to the future to figure out what I can do to ensure its protection as environmental changes continue to occur. The rivers of the west are my sanctuary, whether it be the Green, the San Juan, or the mighty Colorado, every river trip I have ever been on has been one of the happiest times of my life. Experiencing the outdoors at a young age that has shaped me to become the person I am today.…

When I was ten years old, I moved to West Texas. I loved swimming in the lakes and ponds around my home before, so I was disappointed when I found out that there was only one body of water near my new home. This “lake” (about the size of a football field) was called Clearwater Lake. It took about an hour’s time to drive there. The first time my family drove over there, I was amazed by how many people there were, all the cars packed liked sardines, the people moving so slowly it was like molasses.…

Four in the morning. It was easy to forget Arizona's usual suffocating heat as my sweatshirt did its best to battle off the freezing morning. Cold crisp wind nips at my exposed skin as I walk to the edge of the scene and feel the cool metal railing under my hands. Viewing the Grand Canyon for the first time, there is one word that comes to mind, clouds. That is all that could be seen, long, wispy, almost mocking clouds.…
