The Bike
It all started on the first day of summer vacation. Yesterday, I finished first grade; I felt really proud. I felt like I could accomplish everything. Then it came to me; I wanted to learn how to ride a bike. A real bike, not one with training wheels, just like all the big kids who I saw everyday, zooming past my house on the gravel road. They would all laugh together; it looked like a lot of fun.
I went to the shed that had been around since this house was built. It was wooden and was covered with spider webs; there was even a wasp nest built into the ceiling on the inside. The door creaked as I opened it. The faint sound of buzzing from the wasp nest could be heard. The shed was very humid on the inside, for it was mid summer in

Finally out of breath, I got to the top. I looked down on the house, the driveway, and the shed; and took a deep breath. Firmly holding the bike with both hands, I swung my feet over, quickly placing them on the driveway to not fall. I felt more ready about this than any other thing in my life. So, I lifted my legs off of the ground, and placed them on the pedals like I had done the other times, and took off.
I was zooming down the first few feet, gaining speed every inch I went. But suddenly I heard a pop. Looking down, I saw that the chains of my bike had fallen off. This meant the worst, I had lost complete control in the speed of the bike. When I looked up again, I saw a huge puddle of water from the storm, and I was going to go straight into it. Realizing this, I gripped the handlebars and tried to veer out of the way, but it was too late.
I closed my eyes, and got drenched with rainwater and mud. Then the bike slipped, causing it to fall down, along with my already dirty self. As I fell, I landed straight on the first wheel of the bike and heard it break. My back was scarred on impact.
I laid on the ground for a few minutes, in pain. Finally, I got the courage to get up, wincing when I did. I looked at myself, and I was drenched with water and covered in mud. My shirt was ripped from where I landed on the bike and my back was bleeding as well.

When I ride it's like the earth stops at every corner so I can check to make sure a, loud, car isn't roaring towards me. It's like that feeling in your chest that tells you that everything is going to be ok, yet your mind is screaming at you that it won't be. I ride because I was thought that you need to be active in life, but it was never about the one hour of activity time we are supposed to have growing up. it was much more than that. I didn't need help to ride, I needed help to face down my enemies, or conquer my dreams.…

I thought about the logical steps I could take to accomplish the task at hand as I cut in towards the wake. My family has always been a sports family. Ever since I can remember the entirety of my life outside of school has revolved around sports. For my dad it was soccer, a sport which I played and enjoyed but unlike my parents, when they were younger, I had a burning desire to play hockey. Hours of running wildly around my house dressed in goalie equipment, finally convinced my parents to sign their 5 year old up for timbits hockey. I enjoyed playing the game for many years to follow, and still do to this day, but there came a point where I was not getting what I wanted out of playing hockey competitively.…
