On June 16, 1999 a young Somalian child was born in Kansas City, MO. His name was Omar Jailani. Raised in a small town in a very busy neighborhood young Jailani made many friends. Their names were Yasin, Oreo, Yahya, and Abdi. They would always meet up in the middle of the playground to discuss their plans. We would always have fun, we would go from swinging on the ropes, to chasing each other around the playground. But years passed by and each year the fighting and gunshots that are happening around our neighborhood grew more and more. After that very long first day of school our teachers took us outside and we waited for our bus numbers to be called out. Once I got off my mom was waiting for me at the bus stop. When we got home my mom asked me how was school and I replied “good better than I thought it would be”. After school my friends and I went to the nearby park and all greeted each other. Some kids across the park were pointing at us, we knew there was going to be some trouble. The kids started walking towards us, and we were thing what’s going on. When the kids finally arrived I tightened my fist and was ready for anything that was about to go down. The kid in front was a pretty big white kid. As the kids started to talk we didn’t know what they really were saying. We all found out that they were just here to play a friendly game of soccer and not fight. What they didn’t know is that we all specialized in playing this sport. So basically it was Somalis V. Americans. My friends and I played our hardest and we won the game. I had to admit it was a good game for some American white boys. After that game we were all very tired and we went our different ways. When I got home I ate my dinner and headed off to bed early because we had school tomorrow again. This night I slept better than previous days and finally this was a place I could call home.
