Reflective Essay: If You Give A Mouse A Cookie

“If You Give A Mouse A Cookie”, growing up, I loved reading this book. I grew up in a morally upright home with educated parents. My family wanted me to love learning and made it fun. My mom helped me with my basic reading and writing skills. Downstairs in my house was a library. The library ranged from volume books to picture books. Almost every book on those shelves, I read or was read to. I believe that without having that library in my house, I would not have never developed the skills that I did to get to where I am now. I would always see my mom and older sister reading the “big books” and that’s what made me want to develop more so I could be like them. I wanted to fit in, of course, but I had some struggles in the beginning …show more content…
I would love to put my thoughts on paper and I still do. I had so much fun with writing, for example, I would write my own fairy tales when I was younger. I remember writing my own version of “The Three Little Pigs.” I loved to use my imagination and change the story, most often to a happier ending. In school, we would have journals and projects. In our journals, we would write about nonfiction personal events and elaborate on them. As I mentioned earlier, my favorite thing to write about was sharks. I would gather up all my shark books and then write stories based upon the facts from the …show more content…
Not many people agree that it is because of all the technology that we have. In some ways, technology has taken over pen and paper. But what we forget is that we still need to know how to write and read! Education is changing so much and so many students are learning less. I think this is because everyone just relies on technology. Your brain does not stopping developing until your late 20s. Which means that we need skills to get our brains growing and increase our IQs. There are building processes which you follow to be literate, such as starting with the alphabet. From there on you build on words and grammar. You need all these steps to be literate which is why schools should be teaching more

In his book “The Dumbest Generation”, Mark Bauerlein, a social critic and professor, explains his stance regarding the Millennials. Bauerlein claims that students in the last ten years have two major differences compared to previous generations: declined reading habits and declined general knowledge. Bauerlein states these differences, but he fails to clarify the meaning of ‘general knowledge’ and how it is measured. While individuals under the age of thirty aren’t the least intelligent generation, their lack of ambition has decreased along with their interest in acquiring information.…

Growing up as a kid I never really enjoyed reading and writing. It was and probably will always be my least favorite subject, nothing against you my lovely English professor, but I just don’t enjoy it. The only time I really enjoyed reading as a child was when I got my first leap pad and I eventually destroyed it and it was probably within 2 weeks of getting it,…

As educators, it is important to teach children sequencing, because it is a skill that crosses over into other curriculum areas. In children’s literature, sequencing is important, because it puts events in order form first to last, allowing a story to make sense. In math, we use sequence to solve problems and when using order of operations. In social studies, children gain a better understanding of timelines when using order. There are many children’s literature books that teach children about sequencing and time duration.…

When I was a child I always though about business. I wanted to know how things worked, how money worked. I started watching my grandfather write his invoices, deposit checks, talk to people as if he knew them but they had just met. I wondered how he did it, how he played his cards right and got people to hire him.…

“Everyone is a reader… Some just haven’t found their favorite book yet.” I remember how I used to like playing with my electric car or bike and especially caring about collecting the hot wheels cars collection. Like any child at this age, all he cares about is jumping around on sofas, running through doors and breaking stuff and walking on it. But here comes the dream breakers who are our literacy sponsors.…

My journey with literacy has been a part of my life and began before I even entered school. During my early days you would say I was a “repeater”. I repeated things that I would hear from my parents and people that were around me all the time. Some of them were good to say and some not so good to say. My parents always sat down and read to me.…

Going back over my fifth grade notebooks has not once failed to make me laugh and cringe at my boy troubles and lists of cute boys in my class. I love words. I love reading them, writing them and interpreting them. Through all phases of life, I had a usual nature to try and write my feelings down and call it art, even if it were scribbles on a Post-It note. Same goes for the song stanzas I wrote in seventh grade that were really loosely based on a Taylor Swift song and are still relatable today.…

Behind the Scenes of Letters and Words We live in a generation that relies on texting, instant messaging and social media to communicate. None of which require the proper necessities when actually writing but instead consist of abbreviation, misspelled words, lack of punctuation and the list could go on. Writing seems as if it is becoming less and less of a thing as life goes on and technology grows. The thought of writing and reading going extinct one day is a very scary view and something we should never let happen. Writing has great significance and value behind it with many different reasons for why it is so important.…

It's maybe because of the way technology is now, but I think it's a good thing. I find it expands our minds a little more. Times are completely different now and cursive isn't a big deal when it comes to writing. Things change around us as times go on and we also have to change with it too. We're always learning new things and if we were to stay in our old ways I don't think it would help us anymore than it already has.…

English 1303 was filled with many activities consisting of the writer 's toolbox, vocabulary logs, different rhetorical essays, timed writings, presentations, and, much more. I vividly remember the assignment that was introduced to us as the “cookie rubric.” Our assignment was to create a rubric based off the characteristics, texture, appearance, taste, and smell of cookie. It was honestly one of the most constructive assignments I have done, due to the fact that I had to be so precise with each characteristic. I favored this piece of work, because I had a sense of what my Professor has to do in order to construct a rubric for her students.…

When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…
