I ran towards the corner of the tortuous room and huddled up in a ball. My mother reached down for the metal rod, fright overcame me. From the corner of my eye, I saw my father, sitting there watching, never thinking of defending me. The metal rod inched closer towards me and collided with my chest leaving a nasty mark. Tears welled up in my eyes as the excruciating pain ran through me.

“Thank you, Ty. You helped get me out. I owe you one.” We hugged and I got into the car. I looked back at him through the windows and waved a thank you.
They never loved me, never will. They never even wanted me. I was a mistake that ruined their lives. Thoughts were flying through my head on the way to the group home. The three of us, being willed on by the attentive, watching eyes of our peers, went into the house to find a spot to sleep for the night. It was around eight o’clock, and the last glimpses of brilliant orange and pink light were beginning to fade into a star filled canvas. We first chose to explore the large, three story home, and then later choose a place to rest. I, against my will, was leading the pack because I had the flashlight. We walked towards the back of the house with the boards screeching and bending under our feet.…

Long, wide roads, small houses, and steel fences were my view as I walked into an unfamiliar building called Thomas Jefferson Middle School. I did not know anything about the culture or the language; a huge chill came over me, which I have never felt before. I felt goose bumps as I first walked in the building. The building was old and was not well cared for. The colors of the walls were fading and the elevators made the sound of a dying animal when it moved.…

I watch the evening glow reflection as it radiates off of the small fountain in the middle of the pond. The melody created by the trickle of water is synchronized with the beat of my heart, each drop brings the realization closer that this will promptly morph into a fazed recollection. As the delicate air kisses my cheeks, I allow my arms to fall and absorb the comforting warmth that the dwindling summer fever generously offers. I inhale a single, prolonged breath, filling my lungs with pure and tasteful air, that you could only receive in the Northwest. Chitre conveys this isolation by using literary devices such as similes and repetition, and addressing themes such as modernity vs tradition. The poem begins when a father is waiting outside for a train which will take him home. We know this as it says ‘My father travels on the late evening train’.…
