Growing up, school was never my number one priority. Getting by and always doing the bare minimum was okay with me. As long as I passed, I didn’t care. Little did I know, freshmen year had a rude awakening for me. I had zero motivation to even get out of bed in the mornings. I hated school and I hated being there. In the middle of the freshman year, I had a meeting with the assistant principal and a teacher I had never spoken to before. They tried to tell me how important school was and that I needed to put forth the effort. Of course being my naive self, I didn’t listen. Looking back at it now, I wish I would’ve. The end of the school year was approaching which meant exams were right around the corner. I took my exams and passed all of my classes except for one.
This lead me into my sophomore year. I still didn’t want to go to school. This time, I started off the school year decent. That didn’t last long. Before I knew it, it was time to apply for MVCTC. I took all of my exams early to go on family vacation the week before school let out so I did not get my report card until after everyone else already had. When I drove to the school to pick up my report card, for the first time, I wasn’t worried about my grades. I was super excited to see how strong I ended this school year. When I got to the school, I ran into the office. Mrs. Spencer told me to go ahead and get mine out of the stack. I rummaged through the stack of papers looking for my report card. When I found it, I looked at my grades. I looked at the bottom of the page, where I saw a little box. Inside that little box said, “Congratulations for making Honor Roll!” I looked at it for a second before it registered with me. I had never seen anything like that before.
