Narrative Essay About Veterans

I sat in my car gazing through the window as the lightning violently struck through the air. My heart was drowning in the rain as I looked at the broken picture in front of me. I have no dad, at least not one present at the moment. I see a mom at her wits end trying, but I know it's all pretend, an illusion that doesn’t have an ending. Looking at our house, our doll house, with all its broken figurines I can see the lights are on but nobody's home and everything has been left alone. The dust collects on the pictures that were left behind, the images that tell the facade of our lives. No father to be there. We all have lost our sympathy no one really cares. At least that's what we say: it still hurts. But there's nothing we can do when the system …show more content…
Often times those who are injured, physically, and mentally are forgotten about. Just like a grain in a pile of sand many of those that need help are lost in the countless numbers of others that have served. For example, “50% of those with PTSD do not seek treatment and out of the half that seek treatment, only half of them get "minimally adequate" treatment” (Veterans and PTSD). Our eagles take flight but as soon as they injure their wings we abandon them. We turn humans into killing machines and don’t teach them how to turn their humanity switch back on. Our heroes, the ones we once praised, come back and our country is only able to give “minimally adequate treatment”. The reality is if they only gave minimally adequate service then we wouldn’t have all the freedoms that we have today. Why is this any different for them? They give their all everyday for our freedom, and yet we can’t find the resources to help support them when they finish their duties. When these men and women go out to protect their country they don’t just do it for themselves they do it for the freedom of us all. So when they come back it shouldn’t just be special care for one but excellent care for

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

Yet, many do not receive the respect deserved upon returning to America. Veteran: a person who has served in the military. That’s the definition that Google gives you when you type it in, but to me a veteran is more than that. I come from a military family. Words like loyalty and respect are commonly used in my home especially when it comes to describing my father and my grandfather, both veterans who have given up their time to serve this nation. Due to my father serving overseas, I know how it feels to wake up in the morning, walk down the hall, and expect to see a warm smile welcoming you to the kitchen, but instead find that it is not there.…

As you drive to work, walk to class, or bustle through busy streets, do you ever take the time to stop and look what is around you? Do you notice the older man that stands on the corner of the street wearing a blue and red cap, wrapped in a blanket because he has no winter coat? Perhaps you give a pity induced smile and pass by without noticing that his cap reads “Proud to be a U.S. Veteran”. Each day most Americans, including myself, fail to realize that nearly a quarter of our homeless citizens are U.S. veterans. Unfortunately, homelessness in our veterans has become a calamity nationwide; with high homeless, depression, and suicide rates, our heroes are not living the “American Dream” they fought for during their years of service.…

They risk their lives so we can live ours knowing that a bomb won't be set off in our backyard. Think about it.…

Veterans play an important role in society today and the history of not only America as a whole, but the people who live in it. They have earned us our freedom and our rights, and even continue to help even after leaving the battlefield, whether by actively playing a role in their community or going on living the lives they earned for America. Having no veterans would signify no victorious battles or even fights to begin with. The veterans that America celebrates show that America stood and still stands for values and independence. They play a key role in history- who ever read a textbook that didn’t mention ferocious warriors or soldiers conquering forgotten cities?- and create our future at the same time.…

Is the government really granting veterans the health care and resources they need in order to survive once they arrive to their home land? Do you think that maybe just maybe the government focuses way too much attention towards funding the military instead of troops that have returned with some kind of disability or mental issue? I believe that the government is making a huge mistake on how they are granting health care towards a big group of individuals who fought for our country and for them not to be able to receive the proper care is a disgrace. These veterans should be established the best of care just for the simple fact that they have fought for our freedom and have gone through tough situations, which could be death related. The government as well does not offer enough…

Veterans who were handicapped as a result of the war might have limited hiring opportunities and are likely to have low performing abilities on the job which could lead to decrease in future income. Also, factors like skills mismatch, post war trauma (PTSD) and negative stereotypes about veterans might reduce their chances of being hired which could also lead to a decrease in future income. According to Angrist and Krueger (1994), there can be opposite outcomes for the veterans who serve in the wars that were not supported by the public . Veterans who served in such wars are more likely to receive negative reactions from the public and the labor market . Some of these negative reactions include discrimination by employers and employees…

Perhaps one of the most difficult situations a military spouse can be in is separation from their loved ones for extended periods of time. Nevertheless, one of the most wondrous traits military spouses must acquire is flexibility to change and strength through independence. As armed force's spouses across the world struggle to find themselves through the ever-changing scenery of the military experience, surely it is the alteration to negative responses and outlook that paints their identity’s outcome. Indeed, transitioning from civilian life to an environment with an unfamiliar culture can be intimidating.…

Introduction Veterans living every day with post-traumatic stress disorder often feel on edge, have feelings of panic, or feel emotionally numb and disconnected from family, friends, and loved ones. Post-traumatic stress disorder occurs after experiencing severe trauma or a life-threatening event, and the mind and body in still in a state of shock (Smith, 2015; Robinson, 2015; Segal, 2015). Some other major symptoms of PTSD for veterans include night terrors, extreme emotional and physical reactions to reminders of trauma, panic attacks, shaking, heaving breathing, avoiding certain places and people, and withdrawing from family and friends. Wartime experiences, most particularly in the First World War, prompted physicians to speculate on the…

In both past and current society, veterans do not get the appropriate welcome home that they should. In past times they have been so demeaned by their fellow citizens for fighting in a war that nobody wanted to take part in. Whether it be by words or physical means instead of being held high for putting themselves on the line for us, they were broken down to feel as if they were nothing more than worthless trash. Many people believe today that warriors come home and get welcomed back with opened arms; however, this may be the case, but do our soldiers deserve only a measly two or three hours of praise? Think about how much more we could and should do to not only praise, but also support and help sustain the men and women that have fought for…
