Michael J. Mahaney: My Hero

“Toughen up girl.” Three words that I’ve heard my whole life. My Papa taught me to be tough, to not let life upset me, and to recognize everything will eventually turn out fine. While going through a tough time, I knew who would guide me through it. I knew that I could listen to what he said and apply it to my life. He was a no nonsense kind of guy and stubborn as ever. Brave, protective, caring, the only man in my life who has chosen me and cared for me deeply. Michael J. Mahaney. My wonderful grandfather. My Papa was a fighter. He was a survivor. He was my hero. Overcoming a few medical scares in the past lead me to believe that this one will be the same. After surviving prostate cancer and other little problems along the way, I wasn’t …show more content…
She told me that she talked to Papa this morning, and he seemed kind of out of it, so she left work to check on him. When she arrived, he told her that he took some of the leftover morphine, being from when my grandmother had in-home hospice in 2009. Stubborn. He was experiencing intolerable shoulder pain. We asked many, many times if he wanted to go to the hospital, and I’m sure anyone can assume the answer. Stubborn. He slept for the majority of the day and barely responded to anyone. He decided to go to the emergency room at about five o’clock in the afternoon. That says something. They immediately took him back to the emergency room because shoulder and chest pain are associated with the heart. They admitted him to the ICU. Throughout the course of the week, they found something wrong with his kidneys, liver, heart, his lungs filled with fluid. Infectious disease doctors found bacteria in his blood, which is the cause of the problems. There were many tests that took place. A test on every single organ, and every speciality of doctor were in with him. At this point, the problems kept arising, and this seemed very scary. Each day after work I would drive an hour to see him. Sometimes I went from the hospital, to work, and then back to the hospital. I did anything.
July 15th. A very hard day. July 15th could’ve possibly been the second worst day of my life. July 15th was the last day that I ever talked to my Papa, where he talked

That is, undoubtedly, the hardest thing I have ever been through. I sincerely felt like he was ready to be with my grandma because if he didn’t, he would be fighting. Also, he told my mom that he did not want to be on life support be hooked up to machines to stay alive. Again, he was so stubborn. The respiratory nurse tried to turn the ventilator off one last time to see if he would breathe. I sat with my head on the bed, staring at his stomach, hopelessly praying for a breathe. He didn’t breathe. She turned the machine back on, and left the room. Soon to return to do something that would ruin my life. When she returned, she proceeded to take the tubes out of him.

Watching a family member slowly die is one of the toughest experiences someone could go through. I had to do this when I was in my early teens with someone who I admired greatly and held a large place in my heart, my father. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS and Lou Gehrig 's disease, and I watched for almost two years as he lost the ability to use his right hand, then both of his legs, right up to the point where he couldn’t speak to us and he had to blink once for yes and twice for no. It hurt our family immensely to watch him struggle to ask for something as simple as water, but it hurt him in a way that was much worse than the disease itself. He had to look into the world hearing everyone go by his room…

The day that I will always be able to remember the exact details, despite the shudder that would come from recalling it. I had had a pretty basic life up to now. I had an older brother in college and two parents who had taken me to church every Sunday since I was a little girl; despite the fact that my father and the rest of my family were Jewish.…

This is where it went downhill and I seen his condition head on: He couldn’t even walk to his truck completely without having to bend over to breathe for a couple minutes. He looked terrible, but after he caught his breath he smiled and pretended like nothing was wrong, he said something along the lines of, “Well, are you guys going to stand there or get in the truck? haha?” Here, I knew he completely changed his actions and diction, he was ill and in denial, he needed help and he completely denied it so we wouldn’t worry. With a smile across his face, my dad and I also smiled, this smile actually real, because I was young and when someone says they’re okay, they’re okay.…

It was a sweltering day in the summer of 2009. The dawn of the day started like any other day, with the rising sun and the bright blue sky; however, it ended like no other day. I woke up to the sounds of chatter that came from downstairs. It was noisier than usual because we had family from California and Canada over at our house. This happened due to the fact that our two-story house had unoccupied rooms, but there was an influx of people, so my brother and I had to surrender the room that we shared and sleep in our parents’ room.…
