South Carolina has two types of theft, petit and grand larceny. Petit larceny, is the lowest-level offense and is the illegal possession of another’s property or services that are estimated to be worth $2,000 at most. Petty theft is another name for petit larceny and is a misdemeanor under state law. Grand larceny is when the value of property stolen is more than $2,000 and is a felony offense. Jail had more impact on me than any number of online documents on larceny. I have never stolen before and thought of the consequences before I did the action, but I never expected to go to jail. I was aware that there could possibly be a fine, but not of what I experienced in the detention center for one night. I dropped out of the University of South Carolina in Columbia for mental health reasons before any of this took place. Going to jail has not helped that situation at all. I have nightmares about another inmate I saw there that was in the suicide ward. She tried to fight the female guards by throwing her fecal matter at them while completely nude. I met another girl that was a freshman at USC, who was worse off than I was. She had no contact for two days because the phone system was rigged. The only way to receive a call from the detention center was if the other person had prepaid money on their phone. She cried the entire time I was there. Information is not as scary and life-changing as real world
