Narrative Essay About Poverty

Growing up in a Third World country can definitely open your eyes and tell you that there is so much more to life than fitting in or being socially accepted or whatever else reason a person can throw. “Poverty” is basically written on the faces of most people you’ll pass by on the streets, on the kids playing in your neighborhood, on the drivers of public transportation vehicles. Being exposed to all this can really make you appreciative of what you have. Other times, it makes you want to be someone who can help, someone who can make a difference. I immediately called my mom and she came over with her medical tools to remove the staples from his foot. I really admire her because she showed me that being a nurse isn’t only limited to caring for those admitted in a hospital or for your family, but also for friends and anyone who is in need of medical attention. I’ve been to hospitals where there is a huge lack of nurses, where the corridors are crowded with people trying to get tended to but can’t because the nurses are tending to so many others, where the negligence of the poor is great. We visited my mother once when she was working in a maternal hospital in Manila, and things were very busy there since it was a government hospital and was located near the slums of Tondo, a city in Manila. Going to college turned out to be only slightly different from going to high school; class hours were either shorter or longer than the usual, exams were harder and students had to change classrooms and buildings (which was completely new to me). I got to experience how it’s like to live and do things on my own and really get out of my comfort zone, commute just to get from Point A to Point B, to be sick and without the care of my mom. I have learned a lot in my first year of college and it was definitely a great experience because it made me one step closer to the future career I wanted. I’d see the upperclassmen coming from the university’s hospital in their uniforms, and it made me more excited of what was to come. I’ve heard stories about their community and hospital duties, both good and bad things, they’ve mentioned how it requires a lot of patience, determination and hard work since Nursing requires devotion of one’s self to meet the needs of someone else, it may be different in a Third World country but it has the same purpose of caring as the rest of the world. I value all the things I’ve experienced in the Philippines because they’ve showed me how important getting an education is to the future of an individual and how much of a privilege it is because not everyone can get it within arm’s
