Personal Narrative: Parkland Buddy Sports

“When you catch a glimpse of your potential, that’s when passion is born.” (Zig Ziglar). I am most passionate about Parkland Buddy Sports, a volunteer program where people with disabilities are assisted in playing sports. Joining this program has revealed to me who I truly am, since the day I joined I have rarely missed a day. This program has allowed me to tap into my inner-self and gain new skills while finding my own path and reasons to push forward.

It’s made me think harder and work harder, it’s pushed me out of my comfort zone, and ultimately has made me a different, but better person. I’ve become someone that sets a goal, and persistently strives to reach that goal, even when it’s hard and there seems to be no gain from trying. I’ve become someone who can work with a group of people that are different than each other, because we are not all that different. I can talk about business with confidence, I can speak in front of a group of people, and I can tell the difference between a Brahman and an Angus. I’ve truly learned and experienced more than I ever thought possible, all because I joined FFA five long years…

I have been a part of many teams in my lifetime and played several abstract sports, but at Summit Academy High School the sports are very unique. There are mixed attitudes towards the teams, players and coaches that you would not see at any other school. But I like to call them obstacles and challenges.…

I was never a sporty kid. For the majority of my childhood, my hobbies have included reading, playing video games, and other generic nerd activities. I worried about it for the weeks leading up to the first practice, but eventually I decided “Why not? It may end up being fun.”…
