In Winesburg, Ohio, Sherwood Anderson emphasizes the idea that past events define the lives of many characters by the means in which they allow the events to influence their present attitudes and values. The characters Wing Biddlebaum, Wash Williams, and Louise Bentley dwell on thoughts of their past, which allow the effects the incidents had on them seep into their everyday lives and relationships with other characters throughout the story. In the short story “Hands”, society’s misinterpretation of Wing Biddlebaum as a perverted teacher forces him to leave his old life and suppress the way he displays his affection while teaching. As a result, Wing ultimately forces himself to stay in a state of isolation in his new community as he interprets…

Meet this eggheaded villain named Athena, after the goddess of Wisdom. Her story wouldn’t involve betrayal but instead she would be born into having powers similar to how royalty works. Her power would be Intelligence, and not destruction, like playing mind games with people to bring them to her knees and their own. Comparable to the powers of Telekinesis and Psionics she would learn their fears and use them to her advantage or act like a second voice to them getting inside and discovering every secret.…

My parents loved and encouraged me; my brother was empathetic and supportive; my friends (when I had them) were lots of fun without being too dangerous. That said, due to some malfunctioning brain chemistry and also due just to the nature of being a person, I often felt isolated and alone and scared. I was quite nerdy and dearly wished that I could be popular.…

Women have the right to be independent and achieve more than a man ever could. Most women back in the days didn’t have the luxury of that and the reader is able to see it through, Chopin’s “Story of an Hour” and Godwin’s “A Sorrowful Woman.” Gail Godwin lived with her mother and grandmother, seeing their forced independence influenced her to write about the characters searching for their identities (“Gail Godwin” Par. 3). Meanwhile, Kate Chopin’s father died in a railroad accident, which made her get close to her mom and great-grandmother. While living in Cloutierville, she developed her urban ways and collected material for use in her later work (“Kate Chopin: Overview” Par. 2).…
