My colored dry erase markers and the whiteboard which hangs prominently on my bedroom wall hold great power. This is how I brainstorm, capture ideas, manage my time efficiently and write down my goals. Currently, my whiteboard includes homework, extracurricular scheduling, tutor schedules, personal plans and a college admissions checklist complete with deadlines. I was consistently amazed at his progress and elated when his teacher approached me and believed that Luis wasn’t the same student she’d met in …show more content…
I had tutors with last minute scheduling conflicts, others who weren’t compatible, children who were uncooperative and a lice infestation that caused a total panic. Over time, my mantra became “there are no problems, just solutions” as I individually addressed each concern and managed it to its resolution. My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

He has a profound insight into his world and experiences; but he is unreliable. Rodriguez is only able to recount his own personal experiences growing up; which makes him a small sample. He is unable to speak for most of the people like him; although he cannot provide statistics or stories from other “scholarship” kids he does share stories as to why he felt he needed to keep his school life and family life separate. “And, unlike many middle-class children, he goes home and sees in his parents a way of life, not only different but starkly opposed to that of the classroom. (He enters the house and hears his parents talking in ways his teachers discourage)”…

Upon entering my 1st grade classroom, students are welcomed into a multicultural, yet simple world. There are a few maps on the wall and a globe in a corner, and some family photos on my desk. With the start of high school, I did not know exactly what I would do with myself at that point my only goal was to achieve academic excellence and be actively involved in an extracurricular activity. To achieve said grades were at times difficult as many of my classes were honors or AP so the workload were immense and the subjects could become quite complex. Consequently, I would often request help from my teachers, show up for after school tutoring, or do additional worksheets to further my understanding of said subject. After interviewing my friend Brittany O’Donnell, who is a math teacher at Louis Klein Middle School in Harrison, New York. I gained insight into the career, which has allowed me to think more about how I should go about my education. The most important advice I acquired from the interview was that as a teacher should be patient and flexible to adapt to every one of the students to meet their individual needs. I learned from my interview that not all students learn in the same way, and certain teaching methods are more appealing and exciting to students than others. It has become a challenge to meet today’s high educational standards with all students due to many students who have a learning disability or low reading level.…
