As I look at my generation of children, I realized that my aunty, my uncle, and my mother all have four children each. None of this was planned that way but they all have their own story. I can’t exactly tell you the story of my aunt 's, but I do know that her first child was by someone else. Unfortunately he could take care of responsibilities and my aunt 's husband took over as the father. The rest if her children, which is three girls, came from him. On my dad side my grandmother died from having diabetes. She had to get her legs cut just to survive but it wasn 't enough. This had happen before was born so I have no memory of her at all. The only memory I have is from what my mother has told me. My father only had one sister and she never talked about his father. His side of the family was basically limited and I wouldn 't had gotten far with information based off my own knowledge of them. I began to run out of information when it came to talk about other family members that I didn 't know about. An example is my mom 's other brother. The ones that are married into the family as my uncle, cousin, sister, or brother is what I call them. If someone were to ask me if that person was "blood related" to me, I 'll give them their answer, but right after my answer, I tell that person that regardless who they are in real life that 's still my family. If I see someone as my sister and they have no blood ties at all, they are considered my blood family. I looked at it as loyalty, love, and respect. If we have that close bond as a sister, you are considered my sister, nothing else. Sometimes my parent would use a different term I 'd she is upset and being obnoxious. Other than that, she is the same way. If she see someone as family, that 's family point blank period. You can 't tell her nothing different. My mother has been taking care of other people children for many years. Most of them all the way she is and would call her their mom. Even when it comes to my friends, if she likes them she will take them in as her daughter or

I interviewed my seventy-five year old grandpa Donnie, researched the Voyles lineage book that my grandma Arlene helped compile, and talked with my dad in order to find out more about my family’s history. According to Grandpa Donnie, it all began in 1759 when Jacob Voils, his wife, and his four sons landed in Port Charleston from Wales. Jacob was a poor man and could not afford the family’s way to Charleston. Desperate, he made a deal with the ship’s captain to indenture his oldest son William Voils as a crew hand for four years in exchange for the family’s way. Upon regaining his freedom, William furiously changed the spelling of his last name to Voyles to break all ties from his father Jacob.…

Being a first generation American, the eldest of four children, and the first to attend college in my family; There is a lot of pressure on me to succeed and to pave a road where my siblings can follow in my footsteps. Think about the typical 80's "coming of age" movie set in high school. It opens by introducing the audience to the main character, usually not the most handsome, most popular or athletic teenager. He sees the most beautiful girl in the school and wishes he could be with her. Long story short, he gets the girl, loses the girl and some friends, gets friends back after much ridicule, and rides into the sunset with the girl. Well that’s how my story goes… sort of.…

I had absolutely no idea what they were saying, but I stood there smiling and laughing. The problem with being a first-generation American is that there is always a sense of isolation. Isolation from your peers because of cultural differences, and isolation from your family because of cultural differences; I was always stuck in the middle. At age four, my family and I moved from Hong Kong to America, and I quickly assimilated to the culture here.…

My vision for america’s youth today is that we focus less on the newest Jordans or the newest iPhone and focus more on issues that affect us because we are the one that inherit this earth. Materialism eats us from the inside out. Our society places significance on what you own—not who you are, it is sad and bitter fact. Many problems may arise and often do when young people embrace this culture of materialism. Lacking the means to acquire the much-valued material things, some individuals develop low self-esteem., especially for those of those of younger age.…

Family Introduction Creating this genogram was a difficult task for me because my parents and their siblings hardly communicate with each other anymore. Ever since the passing of both my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother, the families have simply fallen apart. Many relatives have distanced themselves from their extended families, and no longer have a desire to interact with their siblings or cousins. Sociopolitical and spiritual issues have caused some members of both families to harbor resentment against one another.…

Life is like a game of poker. In poker everyone is dealt the same number of cards from the same deck. Some are lucky and get a Royal Flush, some get a Straight, and some are only given a hand which consists of a High Card. Life is the same way except instead of diamonds; clubs; spades and hearts, everyone is dealt a certain level of “education, income, occupation, and wealth, the four commonly used criteria for gauging [social] class” (Scott and Leonhardt 117). Not all of us are able to choose our education, income, occupation and wealth, we are just given our hand and we have to make do with what we have.…

Growing up in the late 80s through the 90s seemed like such a long time ago. I grew up in a one story house which consisted of myself, my mother, older brother and sister. I was the baby of the family so evenings consisted of arguments with my siblings, dinner, and followed by sports or playing outside. On Fridays after school, I would head to the west side of Columbus for the weekend to spend time with my father, grandmother and other paternal relatives that lived nearby. I loved the time I spent out west with my father.…

Family, a familiar term that can be defined in various ways. Some may define family as a group of people who are related to each other by blood, others as people who care one another. The traditional definition of family is a intimate group of two or more people who live together in a committed relationship, care for one another and any children, and share activities and close ties. I would define a family as a group of two or more people who share an emotional bond with one another, by blood or not. I will discuss my family of origin and my fictive kin.…
