Crushed Dreams
Brian-Felipe Rosales My dream was to become a professional footballer. I had done many things to start achieving this goal of mine. I started by making the Iowa ODP team, Iowa’s Olympic Development Program. It is a team that travels across the nation where thousands of colleges and professional coaches see young talent play. The year after that, I decided to join one of the best soccer academies up in Des Moines: the Des Moines Menace Academy.

I would watch soccer on television most of the time, and it was everything I wanted to see. No kid wanted to be my friend since my conversations would always be tedious. All I talked about was soccer. That was all I knew. It was what I wanted to be when I was older. But let's talk about the almost six hour trip to get to the windy city, Chicago-just what any kid would do to achieve his dream.
Let’s talk about my worst summer experience, the summer before senior year. It was

I remember my father and I left around 3 a.m. to get to my scheduled tryout which was at noon. I felt worms up and down my arms and legs. The trip was quiet. I had soothing music playing out my headphones though into my eardrums all the way there.
I got there, but I couldn’t believe it. Never, at some point in my life, I had seen so many people in line. The place was vast, filled with hundreds of kids wanting to tryout. I felt like the lonely chick in the farm. However, I kept listening to music and was concentrated in what I went there for.
It was time. I heard the speakers call up the players that registered for noon that day. At that point, my guts wanted to come out. As I was walking on the training pitch, mates started talking to each other asking for each others names and vise

In elementary school, my mom brought me to my first Ole Miss soccer game. As the players warmed up, Hannah Weatherly, an All-American forward, inspected the Mississippi State players like a spider stalking its prey. As the referee’s lips touched the whistle to start the game, the players hustled as if their lives depended on it. Throughout the game, shots were fired; penalties were taken, and tackles were made. The fans throughout the game boasted, “Hotty Toddy!”…

It was springtime during the year of 2012, I was just about to start my summer. I was looking on the internet for sports to do in Kaneland, because I wanted to compete at a higher level. But I was not always comfortable with playing on a travel baseball team, but I knew this could be a great opportunity for me, so I took a risk and after all it, payed off. I asked “Dad would you think I would be able to compete and play on the travel baseball team” He smiled “Yes, but one thing I learned when I was young and playing baseball is; it is a game of mistakes, and the only way you can succeed is if you practice over and over to improve.”…

I walked into Neil Armstrong Middle School's gym, nervous as can be, not ready for basketball tryouts. The only reason I was there was because my dad and sister wanted me to play. I also wanted to play a sport this year, but I didn't think it would be basketball. It was so loud it sounded like someone was yelling in my ear and playing music at the same time. We started doing lay-up drills, I missed so many compared to the other girls.…

“Beep Beep Beep” It is 5 am and my hand can’t make it to the alarm clock before the voices in my head start telling me that it is too early and too dark to get up. But I did not ask for their opinion, I rise like a phoenix and before I know it, I am drenched in sweat and walking out an empty gym in route to the soccer field. Why you ask because I was told I was not good enough, too uncoordinated, and too tall to play soccer and I was on a mission to prove them wrong. There was a month left before the traveling soccer team that everyone told me I was not good enough to play for came back to town for their yearly tryouts.…

The sport in its entirety is what I came to love. So, I’m still following a soccer-centric path as much as possible. Along the way, I guess my passion wasn’t seen by only me, later giving me the opportunity to become my school’s varsity team’s videographer, something I’ll never be able to fully express my gratitude for. It’s gotten to the point where bringing up the sport to friends is just verbal diarrhea for them. Yet, they’ve never gotten fed up, and that’s just it.…
