Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. Two years ago, I was forced to make a life changing decision. After my parents got a divorce, my mother decided to move to the United States of America. This had a great impact on my life, as I had to choose between two people and two different countries. The internal dilemma of choosing whether I wanted to stay in my birth country, Lithuania, or adventure into the unknown was the scariest and most difficult decision I have ever made. I always saw America as the land of opportunity and a better life. However, I was hesitant to make such a great life change and move there. The process of making such a decision had its ups and downs; there were moments when I could not wait to be abroad, yet there were times when I never wanted to leave. Every day, I had to learn, improvise, and deal with the unexpected. Before moving to the United States, I was truly confident in myself. Finding a street or a bus was never a problem. Spending time alone in an unknown place with unknown people, alternately, forced me to acknowledge my weaknesses. Transferring to another high-school was quite a challenge, especially because it was on the other side of the world. I had to step out of my comfort zone, ask questions, and look for help. For example, I never thought that speaking English could cause me any problems. I studied the language for many years, but when I actually tried to speak, I realized that expressing my thoughts in class was harder than I expected.
