In the Spring semester of 2010, my spouse enrolled at San Jose City College. Once he became familiar with procedures and campus navigation, he started to enjoy being back in school. He would always come home and tell me how much he knew I would enjoy school. I would either shrug off the advice or tell him firmly “there is no way I am driving all the way from the Eastside San Jose to SJCC”. That summer we had to move and found a place that is .05 miles from campus. I now thought that maybe it wouldn’t be so bad since I am so close. A year later in 2011 I made the decision to return to school and pursue an AA in Art. This was not an easy decision since I had many excuses why not to go back to school. I felt that since I graduated from San Jose High School 29 years ago, I could not possible by competent in any school subject that involved a textbook. I also feared spending scheduled days outside my home since I had spent the last eight years as immobile as possible due to a work injury and multiple back surgeries that labeled me Permanently Handicapped. …show more content…
After my Assessment test, I decided to go to Admissions and Financial Aid desks. It was then I saw the DSPS office and I immediately thought “I am not handicapped”, but my curiosity led me into the office prior to leaving. Still unsure of how they could help me, I gathered required paperwork and met with the counselor. Being uneasy, unsure of what to expect, I found the counselor so comforting which put me at ease. As he told me what could be done for me, it sounded like a luxury. However, as time went I came to realize that without DSPS, school would be unbearable even if I only took 2 classes in Spring and Fall

At the beginning of my Sophomore year, It was brought to my attention that I in fact suffer from Dyslexia. Frankly that was no surprise since it runs in my family and even as I write this letter, I find myself misspelling things. If I had conceded and let my ‘disability’ dictate my life, I would certainly not have achieved the success that I have. I never let my dyslexia control me. I only let it motivate me.…

The more I thought of the idea of moving the more fear I had, I thought to myself “how are you going to make it on your own, how am I going to enroll for school full time and manage a full time job”? Just thinking of the responsivities I was heading towards freaked me out. Becoming an adult was no joke nor it was going to be fun, wishing to grow up to have more freedom didn’t seem must of a freedom. I ended up going the easy way and enrolled in a community college where I could do general basics without having to move and spending less money in college. With what an average student would take to complete general basics in two year, it has taken me three.…

I put off returning to school because of this very topic - time management. Bethel offers several ways to help with this issue, I particularly like the online calendar as a way to keep assignments and discussion deadlines front and center. I was traveling out of state for the entire Unit 1 cycle; it was a daunting task making sure I was back at the hotel in time to devote time to my studies as well as my work obligations. So, remaining focused on keeping professional and personal worlds separate and manageable is the bane I (like my other classmates) share and must remain cognizant of.…

When I first set my to go back to school, I told myself, it makes no sense going back to school if you’re not going to give 100% into everything that you do once you step foot on the campus that you choose to involve yourself with. To me it makes no sense accepting a position or a role that people depend greatly on your ability if you yourself don’t plan to 1) give them your all 2) enter that position with a pure heart and mind, with no ulterior motive, and 3) being able to take that position and grow from it. Every job I have accepted or every role I have committed myself to on this campus I always strive to complete these three goals. When you come from a country where no one expects much from you, it’s bound to produce a few citizens who…

My decision to return to college was purely random. There was no pondering over the decision; no weighing in the pros and cons, no thinking it through or any real thought behind it. I literally woke up one morning and said to myself “I think I’ll go back to college” and I made the call. I called the College of New Rochelle and made the appointment for the admissions test. And before I knew what was actually happening, I was a matriculated college student.…
