Literacy is an individual’s ability to read and write. Fredrick Douglas stated that “Once you learn to read, you will forever be free,” and he was absolutely right. Reading can take you to places your imagination could never think of, or help you learn about a particular subject or issue. Writing explained by E.L. Doctorow, “is an exploration, you start from nothing and learn as you go.” It allows the expression of emotions and feelings, and can explain to the reader the ideas of what you hold dear to your heart such as the loss of a loved one. These two skills are embedded from the time we are infants and continue to mature as we enter the work force. The teachers were very supportive and even allowed me to do extra library trips when I finished my work early. Reading was my first love, the earliest book I could remember reading was Moby Dick in first grade. I continued to read literature classics and it grew to the point where my favorite author became Shakespeare in middle school and it never changed. In third grade, are lessons became more about passing standardized testing versus just learning, which turned me off from writing. Our writing assignments were about writing to pass, not about exploring how we felt about the passage or even how it applied to us personally. At home I didn’t mind writing in journals, as I mentioned earlier but I would get frustrated because of all the workload from school. The hardest part was not responding to someone else’s post but writing my own. From discussion boards came short essay responses to the big four to six page papers. I’ve had to rely on asking the teachers in depth questions on what they wanted in the paper, and also key points to emphasis on. This was the only way for me to complete my assignments, my grades at first were B’s but I’ve been able sense my freshman year to obtain A’s. Regardless of how much I despise writing, college has been a big help in developing my writing skills and relearning the basic fundamentals.
