Have you ever wanted to try a new sport? Soccer, football, and basketball are all fun, but I wanted to do something new. I came across an opportunity to try fencing and thought that it might be interesting. On my first day, when I walked into the building, I noticed the huge amount of space and heard the coaches yell, “Get ready to fence!”. I could hear the sound from the foils scraping against each other, and echoing throughout the room. I was pumped up and excited to start learning this new sport. For my birthday this year, my mom told me she would let me pick out a new activity to try. I wasn’t sure what to do, and she mentioned fencing. I thought about it for little while, but I was nervous. Our coach explained that it was important to prepare our bodies mentally and physically before fencing. We started with warm-up stretches that helped us learn how to do the proper forms. We learned how to parry, which is when a fencer attacks their opponent, and how to riposte, which is when a fencer counter attacks. We learned that the name of the weapon was a foil or a sabre and that there are different sets of rules for each kind of weapon. I discovered that fencing is one of my favorite activities to do and that I can do things that seem hard if I really try. I had to push myself against an opponent that was older than me and learn new techniques to try to beat him. I felt that this was a coming of age experience because I had to step out of my comfort zone and push myself to succeed in a new sport. I never was able to beat my rival but I learned that I don’t always have to beat my opponent to get something out of the experience or to improve. In conclusion I know that it was a good thing to sign up for fencing
