The New York Islanders returned home early Friday morning from a physical - and some would say lucky - 4-3 overtime win in Winnipeg just hours earlier. They had just finished a brutal road trip through three time zones across Canada and despite a 5-1 record to that point on the trip, had clearly not played their best. Not to mention, Nick Leddy, Matt Martin and, as we would learn Saturday, Calvin de Haan, would all be banged up to varying degrees. Martin and Leddy would be well enough to return to practice on Saturday in preparation for a huge ‘four-point swing’ game against the rival New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, an arena that, unbelievably, the Islanders had yet to visit this season but don’t mind at all. “It’s one of those games, almost like a home game when you come back.…

Ellis Island was one of the main points of entry into the United States and immigrants arrived here from their long journey at sea dirty and unkempt. Today they fly in on planes arriving at our international airports. The trip is much shorter and they are groomed and dress with the latest fashions (Foner, N. 2000). Back in the 1900’s immigrants came mostly from Europe. They came to the United States to escape from crop failure in their homeland.…

Boating into in the Wellfleet Cove in Cape Cod, the first thing I noticed was how the towering sand dunes on the peninsula protected the still, glassy waters within it from wind. The cove was a sanctuary from my anxious life I led at home. My anxiety causes me to have to look at the future as an overwhelming heap of events with a variety of possible outcomes. I remind myself everyday to take things one step at a time so as not to get ahead of myself in a moment. But in the cove, I need not worry about the future because time ceases to exist there.…

Ellis island was an immigration station that processed over 12 million immigrants from 1892-1954. Of the 12 million people that immigrated, about 2% were turned away because they were considered “unfit” to enter the country. In some peak years, 10 to 15 percent of those processed were forced to return home. Immigrants were rejected if they were weak in the mind, mentally or physically unstable, had a criminal record or had a disease. About half the current American population can trace their ancestry back through Ellis Island.…

Passing as an immigrant through Ellis Island was not easy because they faced many hardships, the immigration process was tough, and life was a struggle even after passing through the island.
