Candy Day, a time of connection and joy, can be one of the quintessentially fun days of the lead up to Christmas. The uttermost specific case of this excitement is when we rented out a school for a warm Saturday afternoon, nonetheless in December, and made as much candy as we could physically muster. At the time I was around 5 or 6 so the playground outside was the highlight of the experience. This playground, while it is less than satisfactory for someone older than 10, was nevertheless a literal dream come true to just about every 6 year old. For any child to have free reign of a playground without the restriction on time was just about the best concept I had dreamed up in my expansive and well lived life at the time. I remember playing in the sand on the Volleyball courts with my father, and I remember eating an entire field of “samples” as I saw fit. I remember this day being one of the best days in my life. That’s where our regular family reunion comes in. It may seem like a bit of a downgrade to go from a massive elementary school to a sweet little home in Lincoln, but I assure you at this age and my future ages this is the better option. I don't find myself playing on 3rd grade playgrounds very often as a 14 year old, so it was time for an upgrade. This upgrade comes in the package of going to my aunt and uncle’s house and just hanging out in their yard and eating food that people bring. However generic it may seem, this time is always a fantastic time. Little kids that, to my own ignorance, I’m related to play in the yard in front of us; my brother is still technically of age to do so, at least in his 11 year old mind, so he plays like a 6 year old with free reign of a playground. Sometimes that is just the extent of what happens and it is, in a way, bitter-sweet. At the age of my parents and my other close relatives, this is also the preferred option. Sitting by the campfire and roasting marshmallows over a conversation between relatives that you may not have known existed is a pastime that is more than welcome after a year of no contact.
