Being A Winner Research Paper

Competition is a big part of my family. Everything we do is a challenge; whether it is who makes it to the car first, who eats the fastest, or who can stay up the latest—everything is a challenge. Of course our number one goal is to be a winner because, well, if you are not a winner, you are a loser. I wanted to be a winner so terribly that I ended up breaking my wrist for it. Looking back on it now, I have learned that being a winner does not mean everything and you should not put yourself at risk for just a measly champion title.

Like some, I have family who resides out of state. Every year, typically in the summer, they will come down from Alabama to visit and reconnect with us. With them they bring delicious food, belly-aching stories,

Since swelling had not yet

occurred, my mom did not believe that my wrist was broken and told me to continue playing. Despite her saying that there was not anything wrong, I still thought to myself, Something is not right. Trying to play left me in agonizing pain, so I just went inside and laid down.

While napping, my dad tried to wake me up to announce to me that dinner was prepared; to do so he grabbed my arm and shook it, which led to me waking up yelling because of the pain. I am typically a heavy sleeper, so me waking up suddenly was highly unusual. Due to my peculiar reaction, my parents decided it was necessary to bring me to my doctor. Upon X-rays it was revealed that, in fact, my wrist was fractured in three different places. The only benefit that came from this competition was the sky blue cast that encased my injured arm.

Unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way that swing sets are meant for swinging—not jumping. Sometimes competition seems as though it is everything, but, unfortunately, that is not the case. Being victorious is not worth being put in a situation that can potentially result in
