In that moment, pain flooding into my body like a thousand tiny needles piercing my skin, I drop to the ground and everything went dark.

* * * 3 hours earlier * * *

A gentle shake rose me out of my slumbers. I opened my weary eyes; the light of the sun just starting to peek through my blinds. I stumbled out of bed and down the stairs. The sound of sizzling pancakes makes my ears perk up. The smell of melting chocolate and maple syrup pleases my nose. My mom greets me with a warm smile as I lumber into the kitchen. “Rise and shine sleepyhead. Josie will be picking you up around 8,” she informed me. “Okay,” I mumbled as I plopped down in a stool and began to chow down on the steaming hot chocolate chip pancakes that sat in front of me. Josie ran towards the ball and trapped it with her body. She did a quick pullback right past the last defender and made a run for it. Right inside the 18 she lowered her shoulders and nailed the ball towards the goal. The goalie just managed to get enough behind the ball to knock it away. Our team rushed forward, setting up for the corner kick. Josie took the kick; kicking it just hard enough to get in the air right in front of the goal. I ran forward, held my breath and jumped into the air. I had just managed to get tap the ball with my forehead when someone slammed me from behind. I flew forward, falling at a diagonal angle. I gasped as I realised I was flying right towards the post. I slammed my head right onto the post. Pain rushed into my body as I crumpled to the ground. The whistle blew. The crowd erupted into cheers, but I don’t know why. The world around me slowly faded until it ceased to exist at all.
