A sister’s love

One day, while I was sauntering back to our home, a girl approached me, asking for a food. I ransacked my bag, hoping to find food, but I see nothing... I looked back at the little girl and say, "Hey, I haven’t brought food with me but if you want, I’ll bring you to our home and let you eat there.” A wide smile flashes on her face, and then she slowly nodded in response to what I say.

At the moment we stepped on the house, we hastily ran into the kitchen and caught my mom cooking for our lunch.

“Hey mom, we have a guest.” I say, informing her. She then turned in our direction and say, “Your friend?”

“Sort of,” I replied as I shifted my glance to the little girl beside me. My mom was a bit surprised by how the little girl

Previously in our conversation, we found out that this little girl had no parents and grew up alone in the street. She’s too young for this life, she’s only 10! Imagine! I wonder where her parents live now. Since my mom doesn’t want her to live like that, she has decided to just adopt her. I have no say on that though, as I myself wanted her to live with us too. I’m the only child of my parents. I’m 15 and I can’t wait to sleep with the same bed with her.

Five years later, our family was happy for Denise’s coming in our lives. It has been 4 years since my father came home from abroad. He was indeed happy when he met Denise; in fact, they become closer as they knew each other. They even enrolled her in a pleasant school and supported her in everything she wants. Moreover, Denise and I got closer that no one could separate us. Every time she had a problem, I was there to guide her. And when she’s getting bullied by her classmates, I was there to protect her. I never let anyone break her. But, I guess I won’t be able to do that now that we have found her real parents. When they knew about Denise’s they immediately went to our house and begged for us to return their daughter. The reason why they have lost her is because Denise had gotten kidnapped when she was 2. The kidnapper was asking for enormous amount of money and when they gave it, suddenly there’s this guy who saved Denise from the hands of the kidnapper yet he died while

“We will, and thank you for taking care of our daughter while we were apart from her. Thank you so much.” She says with sincerity. I held Denise’s right hand as our parents still talking to one another and brought her to the garden so I could say my goodbye.

“Hey Denise, don’t forget about me, okay?”

“Of course I won’t forget the first person who helped me to get through in my life. You’re the best sister ever and no one could ever replace you in my heart. I love you, sister,” And then she hugs me, tightly.

“I love you too, Denise. Take care of yourself, okay?” I remind her.

“Yeah, you too, Natalia,"

After that day, we have never seen her again because they already left the country for the better. Though, we still have communication with her. But before they left, her family offered us money in return for taking care of Denise, but we declined the offer. We did not accept Denise in our lives for money, rather we accepted her to become one of our family, wholeheartedly, without waiting for an

Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…
