Legislations are made so that companies follow rules and policies in fear of harsh punishments of non-compliance. In the case of Deepwater Horizon, the chain of command consisted of a VP of drilling and operations who was barely 3 months into his job. Companies should follow legislations not for the sake of compliance but also to make sure that they create an environment of solidarity and an command chain that consists of experienced personnel who have the foresight to avoid such tragedies, and know what to do in such situations. The government cannot support capitalization at the cost of life of the people. The declaration by Japan’s Kumamoto District against the corporation in 1973 was far beyond late. Chisso Corporation which now implements environmentally safe technology in their production process should have saved the environment long ago.
