Narcotics Anonymous Case Study

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a support group that is dedicated to helping current and recovering addicts of drugs and alcohol recover and stay clean for the rest of their lives. NA uses a 12 step program to use in everyday life. It starts with complete admittance of helplessness over the drugs, realization you have an incurable disease, and that a greater power, such as God, is the only one who could restore your sanity. Like they said in the meeting, if you are the powerless one you need the powerful one! The name of this specific group is called “miracles happen” and they are based out of the basement of the Camden, TN police and fire department. The group was led by a local lawyer who was also a recovering alcoholic and all of the members seemed to be veterans at this point in time. The whole meeting had a semi-formal outline of how things preceded, but the talk was very informal and friendly. They started off with a moment of silence followed by the serenity prayer, and then went around and introduced themselves by first name followed by, “and I am an addict”. Then one by one all of the members read off of general pre prepared sheets describing who addicts are, how they get to NA, and how NA is meant to help in recovery and staying clean. And semi-surprisingly they all looked like very normal people that contributed to society. One person even brought her young daughter to listen in, and she was very supportive of her mother. They were all also very thrilled that college students got to see the positive side to this type of therapy and even invited us to come back so we could continue to see the positive effects. Support groups such as these are very effective because you get to talk to other people that have the same experiences and no drugs used to treat
