Narcotic Substance Abuse Research Paper

Psychoactive drugs, substances that alter and affect brain processing, have many different impacts on psychological and physical behavior. Two different classes of psychoactive drugs, narcotics and stimulants, are commonly abused drugs. Narcotics and stimulants have different effects on the body; however, these effects can be beneficial or adverse depending on the rationale behind utilizing them. Narcotic drugs, such as morphine, are highly addictive. However, morphine is commonly used for medical purposes given it alters the severity of pain, and induces feelings and sleepiness, euphoria, and relaxation to its patients. Additionally, it is because of these effects that they become highly addictive and abused. More broadly, morphine is apart of the opiate family - the largest subcategory within the narcotic category. Narcotics have, but are not limited to, the following psychological and behavioral effects:
• Euphoria
• Numbness
• Sleepiness
• Addiction

An example of inappropriately utilizing a narcotic substance would be during a nonmedical emergency, and to recreationally use a narcotic drug for its psychological and behavioral effects. Utilizing narcotic drugs for recreational use is not only illegal, but also is extremely detrimental to an individual’s health. The behavioral and adverse effects of narcotics range from bliss and happiness to psychical withdrawal and depression. During the first few uses and initial contact with a narcotic substance, the human body becomes numb and experiences only bliss and a few select feelings pertaining to happiness. On the inflection point of the experience, users begin to wear off the feelings of happiness and begin to feel tired and
