Narcos: Observation Report

For this assignment, I watched the first episode of Narcos, a Netflix series based on Pablo Escobar, the drug tycoon of Colombia, with the sound turned off. In the first ten minutes, I could see a plane flying over the capital city Bogota. Three telephone tappers were trying to get connected with a phone call of a drug lord. They were wearing casual dress. They were constantly moving their headphones which was likely to show that they were not able to hear the conversation properly. They seemed to be little anxious. The plane suffered rough air and they moved their body on either side. Then, the drug lord talking over the phone was shown. He was wearing a red gown and looked like he just came out of the shower. The setting was of a hotel. It was probably a display of his richness. He seemed to be calmly talking on the phone. On another scene, two people were drinking at a bar. They were wearing casual too. One of them was smoking a cigarette. Their facial expressions were serious. On the next scene appeared a small family. They were wearing house dress. The father was talking on a phone and seemed to be disturbed.

A guy was dressed like Anderson Cooper from CNN. He seemed to be presenting a report. His dress was formal and he was mocking Anderson. After that appeared a room full of press. On the table were three people. All of them were formal. The guy in the middle was dressed like the President. There were national flags behind them. The guy was moving his hands constantly and were making unnatural facial expressions. On his either sides were Vice President Pence and Senator Dianna Feinstein. They were smiling and laughing sometimes while the president was briefing the press. Overall, it was an exaggerated body

Drug smuggling is an offence when an individual transports drugs from one country to another. A man named Olaf Dietrich smuggled at least 70 grams of Heroin packed in condoms which he had swallowed. Narcos emulates the real life notorious story of Pablo Escobar, the kingpin of drugs in Colombia as well as the widespread of cocaine globally. Simply, this ill-famous story makes the blood run cold of many. It is not easy for a man like Escobar to do his job with the perpetual efforts of the law enforcement whose goal is to ultimately kill and diminish Escobar. The two main characters of this story Steve Murphy who is a DEA agent and Escobar go head to head in a ferocious conflict. Brancato, the director of the show, illustrates Escobar in a manner such that the audience is able to sympathize along with him as the passion of crime which burns within him is not enough to make the audience go against him.…

Michelle Alexander wrote an interesting article about how people in the U.S are ‘blind’ when it comes to racism called “Drug War Nightmare: How We Created a Massive Racial Caste System in America”. She says that the racial discrimination seems to be fading away but everybody is just ignoring it. She wrote this essay to make people realize that everybody needs to wake up and notice what is happening to the people who are part of the American society. Her essay is very effective and makes us realize what is happening but she has yet to provide a solution for this problem. Alexander uses several appeals to attract readers and her ethos and pathos appeals were the most effective to me.…
