There have been many cases that have surfaced regarding how narcolepsy and a person’s psychotic characteristic are associated with one another. This article gave me great insight on how narcolepsy can actually be associated with schizophrenia and other disorders. Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that deals with the loss of the brains ability to sleep. Some symptoms include: EDS, cataplexy, hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that is characterized by some sort of abnormal behavior. People who are diagnosed with schizophrenia often have hallucinations, delusions, and random speech behaviors. Below, is a summary of the study that will help one understand the processes and details. …show more content…
These tests were studied through qualitative research and were performed at two centers that specialize in narcolepsy specialties over a nine-year period. To test this objective, the test approach was first based on a questionnaire and then performed pathophysiological investigations. The questionnaire was used to help improve the diagnosis of a specific psychotic disorder, like schizophrenia. Some pathophysiological cases tested for systemic and intracellular neuronal antibodies and immunocytochemistry on specific brain sections to help detect new antigens. These tests, along with a couple others, helped define the characteristics of the hallucinations and delusions. These characteristics were used to compare to the characteristics of narcolepsy. Then researchers picked out all the antibodies that were against the targets. These targets are used in forms of
