When the Hernan Cortez's crew arrived the native Americans welcomed them with a celebration stated in the letter from Hernan Cortez to Charles V "they came out of the city to greet me with many trumpets and drums, including many persons whom they regard as priests in their temples, dressed in traditional vestments and singing after their fashion, as they do in the temples. Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is known to be the most wanted drug lord in the United States, as well in Mexico. He is the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, which is a criminal organization named after the Mexican coast state of Sinaloa where it was initiated. Guzman was previously taken to jail but escaped in the month of July. This was due to an underground tunnel that was located under his cell, where he was being imprisoned, at the Altiplano Federal Prison. Since his escape, he has been in the run from authorities.…
To experience a local aspect of Hispanic culture I visited the Tienda Mexicana La Guadalupana, a grocery store in Chapel Hill. Once inside, the term that came to mind when looking around was bodega. The store was small, but made clear use of its space, with items on the walls, shelves, and even the ceiling. This is in contrast to most “American”, or english speaking, grocery stores I have been to, as they are often wide and spacious, with plenty or room to showcase products. They commonly have bright lights; light, colorful walls; ads and signs everywhere with directions and promotional deals; and music playing over loudspeakers.…

Most people believe “El Chupacabra” is a myth while others don't. Although many have claimed that they have seen it, they don’t have proof. It may just be some stray dog, or canine-type creature. One of the pieces of evidence goes something like this "It can change colors at will, has a hairy, reptilian body with spines all along its back and an obsession with blood. El Chupacabra translated into English means "the goat-sucker," because that's exactly what it does.…
regarding the subjects themselves was compiled from the surveys they completed, this data included education level, position in the household, monthly income, # of children, marital status, residence time in Juarez, and if they had experienced violence while in Juarez. Moreover, this interview was performed during a critical point in the drug war, when the violence was at its peak. C. A group of 16 parents of different families were selected from a larger pool of 300 families based on the fact that their families had 2 or more children, and in 8 families there was at least one parent who was employed in a maquiladora, while in the other 8 families none of the parent were employed in a maquiladora (this distinction was mainly done because maquiladoras…
Narco Corridos is affecting both Mexican and American culture although it affects one of them more than the other. Hispanics that come for a better future to the United States usually feel different from others that speak another language and feel left out. When they listen to narco corridos they feel identified not only because it’s the same language they speak but because narco corridos singers make it seem that everything they say should be okay. On the other side Hispanics that live in mexico get more affected by narco corridos because usually they live in worse conditions and do not have opportunities like people that live in the united states so they wish they had money and think that they don’t have a way to get out of the way they live…
Mexico Mexico, a North American country that borders the United States to the north and Belize and Guatemala to the south. To the west is the Bay of California, formed from an 800-mile peninsula known as Baja California. Two other bodies of water border Mexico to the east; The Gulf of Mexico and Bay of Campeche, both formed by another large peninsula: The Yucatan. Mexico has a rather varied geography: a large plateau makes up the central region, surrounded by mountain chains to both the east and the west. The plateau opens up to the north, and low-lying coastal regions lie beyond it (Infoplease).…

Sinaloa Cartel The Sinaloa cartel is an international drug cartel syndicate made up of several different organizations. The US intelligence community considers the cartel the most powerful drug trafficking organization in the world. They are known for being extremely violent in expanding its drug business using murder, kidnapping and bribery as a tool. In Mexico, many cartels and drug organization have their origins in the state of Sinaloa. The corrido as a style of folkloric-expression is important because of its theme—the Mexican-American hero from the border, defending his rights and fighting injustice from the United States with a gun in his hand. The corrido of Gregorio Cortez presents the Mexican-American as a crafty, humble man who is doing nothing more than protecting himself from the corrupt sense of justice in the United States. The popularity of the corrido that was so oppositional to the United States, therefore, demonstrated a growing unity in the community and the solidification of the Mexican-American identity with a “them versus us” mentality. Finally, I have several other newspaper articles from the New York Times that make explicit mention of a division between Mexican-Americans and Spanish-Americans, even stating that Spanish-Americans are not from the same…
