In the myth is it stated that, “Narcissus’s mother was told by the blind seer Tiresias that he would have a long life, provided he never recognized himself” but this became true, in a way when he rejected the love of the nymph Echo and of a young man named Ameinias, which drew revenge upon him by enraging some Gods to penalize Narcissus. As a result, they caused Narcissus to gaze into a pond, and he saw his reflection. That is when fell in love with his own reflection in the waters.

The first story stated that she was so distraught by his rejection, she withdrew into a lonely spot and faded until that was left was a plaintive whisper. The second myth tell of Echo's falling in love with Narcissus. However, Narcissus rejected Echo because she could only repeat his words, due to Hera because she can only repeat the words spoken to her. She was so upset that she faded away until only her voice was heard as an echo. The story of Echo and Narcissus is used as a warning to those who love someone that cannot love them back and is often used as a basis for understanding the implications of a condition known as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). It is also used in reference to Borderline Personality Disorder
