Traits for this disorder can start occurring during pre-teen or teenage years, normally when someone starts to find their “personality”. However it can also appear as early as age 8, when small children become more aware of humans reaction to each other. Even though an exact cause is not known, most think it is a mix of things such as: reaction to stress, how someone was raised, too much attention given to a child during younger years, and even ignoring or abusing a child could also lead to them becoming self-centered. Psychology Today says that in a 2008 study 62% of people with NPD are male where as 38% are female which is surprising to most people’s assumptions.
