Narcissistic personality disorder, drawing its name from the Greek myth of Narcissus (Pincus and Lukowitsky, 2010), is a rare personality disorder that is characterized by “an exaggerated and unrealistic sense of superiority, a need for admiration, and an inability to understand the feelings of others” (Bates and Neff, 2017). According to Mayo Clinic, those who suffer from narcissistic personality disorder may find it difficult to achieve fulfillment from relationships, and can be unhappy when they do not receive special attention or admiration. One such instance is perceived favoritism among not only child siblings, but adult ones as well. In fact, a study by the Journal of Psychology shows a direct correlation between the ages of siblings and the narcissistic hostility that they display to one another.

Children in recent times have nearly unlimited access to a new medium than their parents before them: the internet. Social media can be exploited and used as an outlet to feel superior to others for children and young adults with narcissistic personality disorder. On the flip side of that, some can feel depressed when they do not receive the self-validation that they so desperately seek online.
