Narcissism, or Narcissist’s, goes back thousands of years, stretching back to ancient Greece. According to the myth, there was a story of a hunter named Narcissus and a wood Nymph named Echo. With all the research, tests, articles and public announcements that we as the public have been exposed to it’s a wonder how someone is “ok” with smoking cigarettes outdoors. According to an article written by Dr. Ludger Hofmann-Engl of the Chameleon Group (2005) “Psychologically there are several criteria which have been applied to this personality disorder. These are:
· The narcissist cannot take perspective, hence situations are blown out of proportion. o I find this to be relatable as far as smokers tend to use situations in their life as reasons to justify their smoking. People may think that they can smoke when they are stressed out to justify their smoking.
· The narcissist has little or no empathy. This means that she/he cannot identify with the feelings or thoughts of another person. o I also find this to be relatable for the obvious reason that smoking cigarettes in public is not considering the fact that there might be non-smokers in the area that the smoke will travel and blend into the air so that non-smokers inhale …show more content…
· The narcissist feels easily inferior and will try to be seen as superior. o If a particular restaurant/theatre posts signs of “No Smoking Allowed”, a person who wants to smoke in public would be condescending of such an establishment and perhaps would search for another place that would support smoking in public.
· The narcissist is narcissist hypersensitive, and hence cannot accept any form of critique. o This relates to the subject because if they were to be criticized, they would become defensive and find supportive evidence to back them up as smokers.
· The narcissist is an exhibitionist and needs sexual admiration o I find this relatable, since advertisements for cigarettes were done with with beautiful women and very rugged handsome men. the narcissist to be seen in that vain handsome or beautiful
