Narcissist Behavior Analysis

Ryan’s discussion on the effects of narcissism within an organization is exceptionally insightful. In the beginning he notes how a narcissist behavior is not only counterproductive personally, but as well for the organization. Narcissists “expect to be recognized superior without commensurate achievements” (Bressert, 2016). It is interesting that even though the narcissist has not adequately performed their duty, they still expect recognition, and believe they are worthy of it. I experienced this narcissist behavior with my leadership while I was deployed. I went beyond my expected duties and they took recognition for it without acknowledging me. The result of this behavior made me quite resentful. “While narcissists thought they were better leaders than their colleagues, their supervisor’s actually rated them worse leaders” (Robbins & Judge, 2009). Narcissist behavior provides no benefit for the individual nor does it assist them in being a better employee. What will suffer is the organization moving …show more content…
Considering self-monitoring dictates our behavior to the outside environment, it is an important characteristic to consider when choosing a job. “Self-monitoring may be related to self-selection in workplace situations. Researchers define self-selection as a process by which people choose situations that best fit their personality traits and attitudes” (Evans, 2008). If one is aware of their level of self-monitoring, this will be beneficial in properly placing this person in the right occupation. For example, a person with low self-monitoring may not be an ideal candidate to work as a social worker. This profession focuses on the needs of others and the ability to be consciously sensitive to the situation.
